Would you leave your dog behind?

Just heard a sad story on the news about a guy who said he eventually had to leave his dog behind as he was rescued from the Hurricane. I personally don't know if I could. What about you?

Spunky 08-30-2005 07:34 PM

One of the hardest things I would have to do...no way..I would stay with him

BusterBunny 08-30-2005 07:35 PM

Paraskass 08-30-2005 08:37 PM

Exactly. Loyalty is a two way street. I couldn't leave my dog behind.

Furious_Male 08-30-2005 08:43 PM

Lets hope most of us never have to make that decision. I know it has to be near impossible to make.

Keep in mind if you had to live for your family (kids, mother etc.) it may be a sacrifice you would have to make.

MandyBlake 08-30-2005 08:50 PM

nope we'd take them. they're little so we could carry them if we had to.

buddyjuf 08-30-2005 08:57 PM

wow... this thread actually made me feel all warm inside...

I would not leave my dog behind either...

pawsregd 08-30-2005 09:07 PM

Not a chance. I would stay with them or have them rescued instead of me.

That choked me up a little..thinking about the poor animals waiting for their masters to come home :(

pornguy 08-30-2005 09:09 PM

Both my dogs love to swim, I would leash them, and swim.

$5 submissions 08-30-2005 09:10 PM

It maybe hard for me but

Hell No

the goes with me. Thank goodness our dog is a Chihuahua so she's really easy to carry :thumbsup

johnnyhey 08-30-2005 09:10 PM

i would use my dog as a floatation device. :)

all kidding aside, there's no fucking way i'd leave my dog behind. :)

SmokeyTheBear 08-30-2005 09:12 PM

Its all about priorities...

If it was me and my dog? it would make more sense to stay with the dog.. If i was like being picked up by a helicopter, i would make every attempt to save him , but if they dont let you , they dont let you..

Lets be realistic here, they probably didn't let the guy bring his dog , because it means less room on whatever he was being rescued in , for other human victims..

It may seem cruel , but it would sure seem cruel if your kids drowned because a helicopter full of some old ladies cats and dogs couldn't fit you.

Dogs are usually pretty good swimmers. I would think they could last longer than a human would..

knought 08-30-2005 09:13 PM

I will never leave my dog either, they've been loyal to me...

My thoughts exactly. My dogs are my family.

SmokeyTheBear 08-30-2005 09:20 PM

For those who wouldn't leave their dogs, your def not alone..

While out on a fishing charter in the gulf of mexico , we were hailed my a smaller craft taking on water and 3 people on board ( and a dog ) we got the man and a woman off and the other lady spent 10 minutes trying to coax her dog out of the ship , and it slowly filled with water and sank with her still in it..

Furious_Female 08-30-2005 09:21 PM

I don't have a dog right now, but no way... I'd do anything I could to take it with me :Oh crap

BusterBunny 08-30-2005 09:22 PM

thanks for noticing that $5..i have two chi's and one malteise it's gonna be a full house

LexiLexxx 08-30-2005 09:24 PM

Heck NO!

alot of people with pet's need to step up to the plate, if you can't afford them or can't treat them as a "part of the family" simply don't get animals! Peeps move and leave their animals behind, pisses me right off, grrrrrrr

KRL 08-30-2005 09:40 PM

No never. I'd rather us die together then leave him behind.

This animal rescue organization http://www.NoahsWish.com specialized in saving animals when disasters like this happen.

Please support their work. This is going to be the biggest rescue effort they've ever undertaken.

:thumbsup

I was wondering about this sort of thing earlier today. Thanks for the link. I sent them $100.

JasonB 08-30-2005 10:55 PM

fuck no, couldnt leave my cat either. i'd leave humans before i'd leave my pets

Missy 08-30-2005 11:19 PM

When the last major hurricane hit Florida, I remember learning that the evacuation shelters do not allow animals. With 15,000 people in those shelters, how many of them would have had to leave their pets behind to protect their own lives? My guess is a huge percentage of those people had pets.

There was one particular older man that they interviewed afterward who had returned home to search for his dog, desperately hoping he'd survived the devastation. He'd had to flee at the last moment, and he seemed as if his dog was the only thing that meant anything to him. I remember thinking "then why the fuck would you leave him behind???" But I guess he did what he had to do. It was heartbreaking :( And I never did learn if he ever found his dog.

But I guess the point is that we can all say that we'd never do it, but until or unless we are in that situation, we just never know.

abadfish 08-30-2005 11:32 PM

I wouldn't be able to leave my cat behind...

reynold 08-31-2005 12:27 AM

i would never leave the one i love. if i had to die with my dog so be it.

Semi-Retired-Dave 08-31-2005 12:49 AM

I wouldn't. That's all I have are my two little dogs. That was suck bad.
But again, its a decision you have to make on the spot to save your life. Nobody here can answer that unless they get put into that situation.

evanmorgan 08-31-2005 12:51 AM

i have a cat, no loyalty at all, she would run and leave me without a second thought, but i still dont think i could leave her behind

pocketkangaroo 08-31-2005 11:42 PM

I don't know if I could. The story was actually from a guy who was rescued with a helicopter. They just couldn't take the dog. It was more or less sit on the roof and die with your dog, or leave him behind.

As someone else mentioned before, my dog wouldn't leave me, I wouldn't leave him.

SleazeQueen 09-01-2005 12:25 AM

I'd like to say I'd never leave her, but shit happens. Did you guys see the video of that guy who was on the roof with his wife and kids when the house started to come apart. He held onto his wife as long as he could but she told him he had to let her go to save their kids.

I'd like to think I'd never let go of my husband or my dog, but whenever you say "never", life has a cruel way of finding a way to test that theory. :(

Adultnet 09-01-2005 01:53 AM

well I guess I would rescure my pat..
