>< Burning Man Time Again! ><

Every year I go to Burning Man. (This is my 8th time.) And usually there are enough interested GFYers for me to post about the journey and explain a little about it. This year is especially exciting because I get to share it with tASSy.

This thread will serve as a bookmarkable place for tASSy and I to post pics and stuff about our preparations, etc.

So consider this your warning of insanity to come. Mwahahahaha!!!

http://lustmonkey.com/2004/temple/images/5sidestare.jpg

1)?What is Burning Man??

It is an annual festival in the desert outside of Reno, Nevada that focusses on "Radical Self Expression." People have compared it to Woodstock, a humongous rave, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and a Convention for Artists.
It is like none of those, and all of those. It?s a place where you can do anything you want and not be judged. Any creative impulse is revered. And people create some of the most amazing art the world has ever seen. At the end of the week most of it is burned.

The event is commerce-free. Nothing is bought or sold. Nothing is bartered. ONLY GIFTING.

And the most important part: the event is PARTICIPANTS ONLY. NO SPECTATORS. If you go to Burning Man, you are expected to do your part to make the event better. Whatever your gifts are (cooking, DJing, singing, massage, etc.) you are expected to share with the community. (as well as help clean up, etc.)

Confused, yet?

tASSy and I have begin our preparations for a week of desert survival camping and artistic bliss. We?ll be posting updates here so you can follow along. (NOTE: tASSy went once before, but this will be our first year going together. So most the pics I post will be form my collection)

I was wondering if this was the first year Tassy was going - awesome! :) I love your pictures and stories from there.

Harmon 08-16-2005 08:45 AM

Looks like a blast! Are there a ton of hallucinogenics there? I am assuming so.... :1orglaugh

Halcyon 08-16-2005 08:45 AM

ALSO: Feel free to ask questions. Burning Man is very important to me...I almost conmsider it my church. So I'm happy to explain or discuss things.

There are many parties there, but it is much much more than a party.

JFK 08-16-2005 08:46 AM

To me, hallucinagens on the Playa are redundant.

What fun is a hallucination when there REALLY IS a guy dressed like a Giant Rabbit, playing a guitar while riding a unicycle!?

("The Playa" is what they call the salt flat where it takes place)

Looks like an amazing event!!!

I've never been to burning man, and frankly i can't see myself there. However I've heard from many people with similar accounts of their time at Burning Man. I've heard it to be a surreal experience that is beyond comprehension and for the most part completely indescribable.

Don't be a Playa hater!

not exactly, my least favourite people at burning man are also my least favourite people at the nude beach - the people who only go to stare at others being free with themselves/each other. burning man is a participatory event - meaning you don't stand and watch content, you *are* the content. you are all part of the same whole. it's a living/breathing art project!

Pete-KT 08-16-2005 09:21 AM

Can't wait to see the pictures bro looks like a badass time

Yo Adrian 08-16-2005 09:22 AM

Have a blast Hal & Tassy!!

I have read a lot about Burning Man over the past few months, and was planning on going but I kinda impregnated my wife and she is due to have our 2nd boy around that time :winkwink:

I've bookmarked this thread, looking forward to your pics!

Rand 08-16-2005 09:24 AM

I'm in prep mode too! My bike just got a tune-up (and a make-over), I've created several "gifting" items, meeting tomorrow night with camp-mates to discuss plans, and have already started to "pack".

I'll be a part of Bouncey Bouncey camp this year for my third return to the Playa. I'm bringing three first timers with me too. I was wondering if Tassy had been to the playa.

BORG is expecting 40k (plus) people to attend the 20th anniversary of burning man this year. It sounds like the big art will be back this year.

I hope I run into you and Tassy. I only saw you one day last year!

HAVE FUN YOU TWO!! Post lots & lots of pics of your wonderful experince! :thumbsup

hey! yay for bouncey bouncey! we camped next to them at xara this year, along with purple turtle, who we'll be near @ burning man this year as well. i hope to see you there! i'm not a virgin to burning man, this is my 2nd time, my 1st year was 1998 (same as Halcyon) - this will be my reintroduction - very spiritual for me, the meaningfulness of doing this *with* my partner in life-art speaks volumes to my own soul ~ hopefully we can share some shine! look for the pink passion pigs :)

Just curious, have you ever been to a Rainbow Gathering? I have been to both Burning Man Festivals and Rainbow Gatherings, and find the Rainbow Gathering to be more to my liking - it's more mellow and less pretentious.

I enjoy the artsy sense of Burning Man, but there are many people with a "freakier than thou" attitude. Also, the weather is usually better at the Rainbow Gathering which moves around to different States every year.

Anyway, I won't be able to make it to Burning Man this year, so it will be fun to experience it vicariously through my favorite pink couple. I love the pictures that you posted so far.

Everyone loves pic's so here are a few amateur snaps.

This was what the man looked like on the morning I arrived. Most of the city hadn't been built yet and construction on the pedestal for the man was still under way.

i am so excited, i'm getting my goggles prescription this year (most people know i wear glasses (see sig)) and that'll make these dust storms that much more easy to deal with!

I am looking forward to reading about your adventures. I always do, I can't believe it's that time of the year again. I especially look forward to hearing about your time there as a couple...Live free my pretty pink ones lol :)
