Why is it soo many top posters make their own boards?

I never felt the need to get into someone else's business just cause it worked well for them. I do my own thing. I've always done my own thing. That's not to say i don't walk with my eyes open, but I try NOT to jump on bandwagons.

When I realized I'm wasting way too much time on GFY without any real financial return (ok i made over $30K in sig money but that's fuck all) I thought about it and rather than COMPETING with GFY - a board that has given me incredible good times, amazing contacts and unbelieveable exposure for my business for 4 years now - I decided I'd try and do something to add to it and created ambushinterview.com - First thing I did was call lensman and make sure he was ok with me running something revenue producing with his board, which he was ok with cause it ADDED to GFY instead of taking away from it by making a competing board.

I always wonder why soo many other people don't think like that? It makes me sad when i see people making their own adult webmaster boards with no real origionality behind them and all it's really about is going after Lensman's client base.

MrIzzz 02-16-2005 11:07 PM

gfy is my number one board, but i try and support some other boards as well here and there because i like the small group of posters at them.

however, i dont ever see myself starting my own board, i love it here, plus i have to put in another 15k before i would consider myself a big poster, lol

Sly 02-16-2005 11:08 PM

My new board launches tomorrow. And I'm not even a top poster! Ha!

LittleMack 02-16-2005 11:10 PM

Not sure, I ran a board for few months but found to be pain in the ass.

In business, everyone goes after everyone elses client base. There is very little innovation in this industry.

95% of webmaster boards as well as affiliate programs are nothing but copy cats.

sickbeatz 02-16-2005 11:11 PM

Hmm.. good point... I've never actually looked on any TGP boards before.. Do people actually use them?

Pete-KT 02-16-2005 11:11 PM

its a cat fight game everyone tries to steal from the other person, i do my own thing and if i make money then good if it fails i learn from my mistake

slapass 02-16-2005 11:13 PM

there's a rule to success - you either have to be first or best - those that are BOTH make STUPID amounts of cash for long periods of time

Spunky 02-16-2005 11:16 PM

GFY is the busiest board with more new webmasters than the other ones.Plus I get paid to post here and not there :winkwink:

it will be - I've had a LOT of requests for ads already on it - a LOT

reynold 02-16-2005 11:18 PM

For me, GFY still rules! :thumbsup

KRL 02-16-2005 11:18 PM

Competition is a good thing. It keeps everyone on their toes.

Boards come and boards go, they're just like nightclubs. What's hot and in today will be out and old tomorrow.

I did one just to have my own board. It gives me a chance to interact on a more personal level with the people who enjoy my posts. Mine is small and cozy feeling and I'm having a good time with it. 3 GFY'ers are MOD's already.

I'll be thrilled if by this time next year I hit 1,000 members. Not trying to be the biggest, just the board with the most quality posts.

Chris 02-16-2005 11:19 PM

Egos I would guess ?

jonesy 02-16-2005 11:21 PM

some people think they can have the same success that GFY has.

Couldn't you have at least tried to come up with a more original name for your board though?

Juicy D. Links 02-16-2005 11:23 PM

i am starting my own board, but nobody is allowed to register or post but me.

Spunky 02-16-2005 11:24 PM

Like it was already stated.flavour of the week..although it's cool to have a board eventually everybody always comes back here

Obviously. You being the top poster here is a damn good indication of how much support you give other forums!

NaughtyRob 02-16-2005 11:31 PM

Its because they get a "God complex" and think they can somehow do it better.
:2 cents:

i have the god complex, believe me - i got it bad. I still don't see the need to bite the hand of someone who's been really really good to me

Cory W 02-16-2005 11:35 PM

They own programs many times. It is a smart business move.

I highly doubt that the board business is a high percentage of annual income for them.

If they can get the community going, which many have, more power to them.

I, as does Weg / G3X, supports other forums.

machinegunkelly 02-16-2005 11:37 PM

I think its cause those of us that have been on GFY for so long , long for how it used to be .. yes full of BS as always , but atleast there was a good business to bullshit post ratio .

Those days are gone and I think many are trying to establish a place for business away from GFY

Doctor Dre 02-16-2005 11:39 PM

I've had my own board waaaaaaaaaay before everybody started the fenzy (I think we started it a bit b4 gfy) ... mostly awi people moving there ...

was pretty bick back then :P

There is no point in starting a new board anymore ...

Looking back I should have. It just struck me as ironically funny that that name was available. So I said what the fuck and decided to go with it.

Dude you are one of the funniest fuckers I've ever met. Have you ever thought about doing standup comedy? Man, you'd have the club laughing their asses off with your Juicy routines.

Lykos 02-17-2005 01:37 AM

I don't know, probably they think they will made another GFY but they won't...
i also have a board, but it is for webmasters from Ex-Yugoslavia,just to hang out,not any profit:)

sonofsam 02-17-2005 01:49 AM

im new to the industry, but us canadians face a lot of different challenges then people in the US and EU do starting out.. especially with processors.....that was the main thing behind the board in the first place.... needed a place to be able to help eachother out with it

Not sure, but PHPbb is free. Trying to steal client base is rough..but just setting up a forum is pretty easy, and good for the soul. :winkwink:

Tala 02-17-2005 02:18 AM

Actually, I'm not into trying to outdo GFY. GFY is an industry staple for fuck's sake. I just like to have a little board off to the side for just My own pure enjoyment, getting some quiet work and conversation done, and just basically enjoying My Goddess complex. Is that so wrong? :helpme

FYI I just clicked on the 5 pics of Wired Guy on your site ( ambush interview # 1 ) and only 1 of them loaded.

polish_aristocrat 02-17-2005 05:58 AM

On the subject - I don't think any new adult webmaster board will be a real danger to GFY.

Well, unless Lensman bans you, Juicy, Wired Guy and KRL here, then they all will go to another board and the masses will go after them.

But I cant see it happening.

What can happen, some new boars will come and go, but I am quite sure GFY's ad revenue is increasing each year regardless of that.

webgurl 02-17-2005 06:11 AM

I've had a board sice 2002 (far from top poster)
