If you catch it fast enough you can stop hiv from infecting you once you've been exposed. They have something called PEP (post exposure something) that they give to medical staff if they've been pricked by a needle.

They put you on a full month of hiv drugs within 72 hours of your exposure. And the belief is that the drugs can kill the virus in your body before it has a change to take hold in you. They did a study on this in south africa and something like 500 people went on PHP and almost all of them came out negative after their high risk exposures.

And by the way it's completely illegal for her to have sex and not tell her partners. She could go to jail for that if someone reported her.
