the real reason most people are in this industry?

Do you think it's really because it's an opportunity for good money...

or

Do you think it's because most of the people in the industry really can't hack it in a real job?

Seems to me that a lot of people talk about having no boss, working from home and making their own hours simply because they can't make it in a normal work place.

Judging from half the people on the boards, I seriously doubt they could cut it in the work place.

correct.

I would'nt know because I never heard a real job.

Actually I did....1 day I was a paper boy... I was fired on the spot for walking to slow and eating an icecrem. :1orglaugh

Spunky 05-05-2004 06:43 PM

Probably a bit of both..alot of the younger webmasters probably only had 2 or 3 three jobs. They know those 10 buck an hour dead end jobs don't cut it.

Napolean 05-05-2004 06:43 PM

im the opposite.. its crazy but i actually like my part time job better than what i do at home..

i can program, run sites, help friends find clients and all.. but its all boring to me now since ive been doin it 2 years.

no motivation anymore, ive never been rich and it doesnt bother me if i never get there.. the most important thing for me is to like what im doing.

what i make at home and at my job is more than enough to enjoy my life, but i couldnt imagine working from home my entire life, i tried it for 7 months and after the first 2 i absolutely hated it.

Lace 05-05-2004 06:45 PM

I think it's a little combination of both...Everyone knows the money is great if you know what you're doing. But as for myself, I really can't stand authority. I don't want to work a typical 9-5 40hr work week and only pull in a few hundred a week. Thats not enough for my champagne taste in life. Some people are only in for the money and/or a side job but some also take it as a full time career.

Tired of typing now. Got work to do :1orglaugh

I like to think I provide a valuable service for the unfortunate people who are not physically able to make it out to view such activities available on my sites.

After making this kinda living, you get soft. I can't wait to work on my offline projects this summer and get more of a workplace feel, it's either that or i'll have to be a webmaster all my life and the idea of it isn't too pleasing.

You get isolated in this kinda work and i need to boss people around.

detoxed 05-05-2004 06:52 PM

So I dont have a real job?

Diabolical Cord 05-05-2004 06:53 PM

I love the freedom. I just miss the steady income and interaction with people.

mpulse 05-05-2004 06:54 PM

Well, being that I am just getting into this...I do have a full timer and this. So I'm pulling double duty for now.

I love money and love to be around beautiful women. combine the two and bingo here I am. I could totaly work in "the work place" (if the work place was a pirate ship):winkwink:

Cost of entry.

Wilber 05-05-2004 07:20 PM

Yea, you got to have manly balls to let someone more unqualified than
you rag on your ass for not filling the copier with paper 'cause the
office rule is if you see 10 sheets in the tray your suppose to fill it.

Doesn't matter what job you have there is always someone above you
that gets pissy and starts to make your day shittier than it already is.

But then again some people are born to have a job and fit into the
pecking order system perfectly.

Your never going to be wealthy by cashing paychecks and it's certainly
no measure of "cutting it" in the world. It's more of a measure of how
good of a slave you are.

bignasty 05-05-2004 07:29 PM

I've worked enough at regular jobs to know it aint gonna cut it. All you'll ever have at a regular job is a decent living if that.

Illicit 05-05-2004 07:35 PM

I have a full time 9-5 as an Engineer, I just thought this would be easy money... Not as easy as I thought, but you can make some extra ca$h :Graucho

BradM 05-05-2004 07:37 PM

Flexibility... good people.... MONEY

Oh and because I have no skills for the real world. :thumbsup

Adam-EB 05-05-2004 07:37 PM

The money's good, the hours are good, but the best part is being home when the kids are here. My last "real job" had me away from home when it counted... Trick or Treating, school plays, baseball games, etc. I wouldn't trade this for anything.

I was supervisor of a 60 lot trailer park... you know, doing real work like digging, heavy lifting, chopping firewood year round, carpentry, electrical... all kinds of stuff I'm sure you would consider way to hard.

That's just one of the jobs. I also worked in a grocery store, I've done door to door sales, I was a radio announcer in a mid range market, I was a dj in a strip club and much more...

I can hack it just fine, don't worry. :winkwink:

forgot to mention: i AM the boss. have employees, etc. i will never become one.

Rochard 05-05-2004 07:44 PM

Well, I can hack it in a real job. I'm a graduate with a degree in computers. Joy. But I know one thing that will always remain true - SEX SELLS.

In the beginning it was cool seeing naked chicks. Now it's about the money honey.

jojojo 05-05-2004 07:45 PM

I'd say it is a mix of 50% of people who cant hack it and 50% who see the opportunity etc

KRL 05-05-2004 07:56 PM

I love it when I'm in complete solitude in my office at home, and go bonkers when I go to my biz offices.

I stopped working the corporate world in 1984. Learned a lot about business, but had a hard time dealing with someone above me giving orders.

After that I said even if I ever had to go really down low, I'd still be happier selling lemonade then ever working for someone again. Fuck that bs.

I got into the biz for the money and the simplicity of it.

stephanie m. 05-05-2004 07:57 PM

The freedom is golden. I do well in a more traditional workplace as well though.

LadyMischief 05-05-2004 08:00 PM

I've had a lot of mainstream jobs, some of them very demanding, including training horses, acting as an advertising director, etc etc... This industry is just one I happen to enjoy, and my husband brought me to it... :)

eroswebmaster 05-05-2004 08:02 PM

I was stuck working the soda machines. I envied the fry guy so much and they would not promote me.

1. I'm guessing alot of people here have real jobs and porn is a side project. Wait, I don't need to guess...

http://www.webmastervault.com/tip-webmaster-jobs.shtml

2. What's wrong with wanting to be your own boss? I'm sure some people rather make less working from home and having more freedom than making more slaving a 9-5 job.

nothing wrong with it. Those who truly want to be their own boss, and those who just can't hack it at a day job are 2 different people though.

AMADude 05-05-2004 09:32 PM

Money.

And sex.

Ian 05-05-2004 09:42 PM

Lot of kids on this board. :(

kush 05-05-2004 09:43 PM

For most of us it starts out as convenience... and for the lucky or smart few the reason turns into money.

Odie 05-05-2004 09:46 PM

umm hello?? I think looking at naked women fits in there somewhere as welll??

I got into it just by fluke..had a roomie that was in it...but it was mainly for the $$ and yes, I don't like working 9-5 although I am doing it on the side now..

NickPapageorgio 05-05-2004 09:47 PM

I dunno why I am here. I was a concrete construction superintendent for 10 years but FUCK THAT WORK. Man it sucks having to babysit a bunch of fucking drug addicts and drunks for 15 hours a day in the 95 degree weather. I don't care if I make any money or not lmao...
