TOP 10 Athletes of All Time!

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...aroundathletes

10. Lou Gehrig
9. Gordie Howe
8. Michael Jordan
7. Jackie Robinson
6. Rafer Johnson
5. Wilt Chamberlain
4. Bo Jackson
3. Dave Winfield
2. Jim Thorpe
1. Jim Brown

bcooter 04-29-2004 04:16 PM

ahhhhh ALL AROUND athletes. I was gonna say, that list isnt right at all. but if it's all around athletes.... fine, ill buy it.

heymatty 04-29-2004 04:18 PM

You probably never heard of him but Daley Thompson beats all those :)

hershie 04-29-2004 04:19 PM

I would have picked Charlie Ward over Micheal Jordon since he won the Heisman while Jordon didn't excel at his 2nd sport.

<IMX> 04-29-2004 04:36 PM

Neither did Charlie Ward...He was damn good at both, but not great at either. (Gino Toretta and Andre Ware have have heismans...)

As well there are quite a few footballers who were drafted in baseball out of high school.

I think Jim Brown as tops is disputiable..
I'd have to go for Thorpe

Bansheelinks 04-29-2004 04:38 PM

Thorpe all the way............can you imagine what he would be doing with today's training and dietary improvements?

SCtyger 04-29-2004 05:03 PM

Bo Jackson.... he was a studd. tragic.... just tragic..

... remember when he cought the pop-fly vs the orioles .. and proceeded to scale the centerfield fence? damn...

doornx 04-29-2004 06:29 PM

Wilt Chamberlain is the bomb...30+ points and 20+ rebounds per game

reynold 04-29-2004 06:39 PM

List looks good enough to me. :)

You are bang on man.

How a baseball player can be asserted to be an "all round" athlete is beyond me.

Same for a football player. Where is the endurance?

How could Pele not be on the list?

The list is American pro sports focused, with a token Olympian.

I would be inclined to make my list the best nine decatlaletes of all time.......

.......and Wilt.

:rasta

maxdaname 04-29-2004 06:55 PM

Where the fuck is Wayne Gretzky, Larry Bird, Pele

baycouples 04-29-2004 06:57 PM

How can you not have Wayne Gretski on this list? ESPN has been going down hill for a while, but this list proves it.

aflex 04-29-2004 06:57 PM

where's Chris Dudley?

CDSmith 04-29-2004 07:49 PM

I wouldn't consider Gretzky for best "all-round" athlete. He's #1 for his sport, but that's pretty much where it stops.

I'd say a guy like Bruce Jenner would qualify though. Johnny Weismuller definitely.

baycouples 04-29-2004 08:28 PM

CDSmith,

Gretski is one of the best athletes for any sport. You should check into his biography and achivements that are still holding many records after decades.

Jer 04-29-2004 08:37 PM

This list stinks.

newsdude 04-29-2004 08:42 PM

I hoped they would just stick with one sport.

Priapus 04-29-2004 08:59 PM

Jim Thorpe should be number 1. he had olympic gold in like every event, plus star baseball and football. you cant beat him. Brown good for sure, but not as good as Thorpe.

Gman.357 04-29-2004 10:11 PM

Holyfield was a better all round athelete.

:2 cents:

No question, number one should have been Bo Jackson.

I've followd Wayne's career since he first played in the WHA <i>before</i> the NHL. I know full well what his accomplishments are, I don't need to look up a damned thing about him. The point you are all missing is the what the term "ALL-ROUND ATHLETE" means. It's not so much about a one-sport wonder as it is about an athlete being proficient in many different sports.

Iron man tri-atheletes
Decathaloners
Strong man competition athletes
Multi-event swimmers
Multi-event track & feild athletes

Those are the types that should top any all-round list like that.

bufferover 04-29-2004 11:08 PM

I think that Michael Jordan is the best of that list

sake 04-29-2004 11:33 PM

Drazen Petrovic and Ayrton Senna.

reynold 04-30-2004 12:47 AM

I hope they do another list per sports.

Firehorse 05-01-2004 07:57 AM

No list would be complete without Bruce Lee!!! :thumbsup

Kard63 05-01-2004 08:18 AM

One of the worst lists ever. He shouldn't have said all around, he should have said USA only with a fanboy flavor for baseball. If you considered multiple sports it would be Jim Thorpe at #1. If you only consider one sport then its Wayne Gretzky or Jerry Rice.

But what do you expect from stupid as ex-jocks at espn anyway.

Holyfield was a cheap ass headbutting, praying to god to beat the other guys ass, cheap fuck. He almost got his ass kicked by exconvict slow ass mike tyson phase 2...... probably would have without the headbutts.

Because its stupid rednick bullshit. Soccer isn't hillbillie enough to be on the list.... God this list makes me hate Indiana more..... people that talk sports more too...

Its like they picked a fat redneck ex-jock up at an indiana BBQ and ask him to compile a list..... the only thing missing is nascar. This dumb fuck is more into the american past times (sarcasm).

Vitasoy 05-01-2004 08:27 AM

blah this is espn were talking about :1orglaugh

Torn Rose 05-01-2004 09:08 AM

For the few who think Brown and Thorpe were just football players I would suggest looking them up.

Brown is still the only person in 2 separate Halls of Fame (Football and Lacrosse)

Thorpe was just unbelievable. Anything he tried he seemed to dominate.
