in times of video conferences i see little need for travels, unless you have a job where you need to shake hands in person (where i couldn't name any job at the very moment)

as far as not trusting the system, do you use credit cards? do you have a bank account? bonus/customer cards at your local shops? use a mobile phone? your moves are logged anytime anyway.

As a french regard on this situation ( let me precise cuz many of you hate frenchs ), It's totally logical to expand this security measure to every people (european or not) who is coming in the country.
It's for the security and too much security is better than no security. I personally think it's a good initiative and each country should do the same.

But to be fair to both Clinton and Bush .. the world was a very different place PRE 911. Even on 911 itself people wanted to dismiss the idea that it was terrorism. Nothing that large scale and catastrophic had been seen yet. The worst terrrosim attack in the U.S was Oklahoma and it paled in comparison.

So had Clinton OR Bush said "yeah let's go into Afghanistan and kill a bunch of people in the name of OUR national security" before 911 .. the whole country would have been in an uproar against them.

I think both presidents saw it comming .. but in a slightly democratic system they would have had to get a lot of support before being able to do anything about it. And that's not too easy when the terrorists are still seen as a petty threats who plant car bombs and attack embassies in foreign countries.
