Tip or not to tip
 

O.k. I went out tonight to have a meal at Chilis . I was dieing for some babyback ribs. So everything so so when we get done the waiter comes over with the ticket and promplty turns and walks across the room just watching us from a distance. I jokeingly say to my girl how much her half is . I divide the $31.02 ticket up and tell her she owes me $15.51 . She looks in her purse as if to pull out some money . I reach in my wallet and pull out a $50.00 bill and lay it on the table. The waiter almost gallops over to the table and picks it up off the table . Looks at me and says will you be wanting any change. I look up in amazement and say well YES! So I think about it while he is gone and say to myself and my girl should I tip or not , I ended up leaving him $5.00 ......What would you do?

Tipping in the US is voluntary. Not mandatory. With that said, it is customary if you get good service. Basic tip is 15% of your total tab. Given your financial resources at the time, $5 is okay, its better than the $0 you COULD have done if you wished.

In most of the world, tipping is NOT customary. Indeed, in China, during the Mao years, if you tipped, the waiter would get PISSED AT YOU for condescending to him.

I almost always tip at restraunts. Fuck last weekend I was drunk and left a nice tip at a fucking truck stop restraunt we were at.... Bought for 8 people and left one nice tip for no fucking reason lol.

MR. WHITE: I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that shit's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin their job.

MR. BLUE: Our girl was nice.

MR. WHITE: Our girl was okay. She didn't do anything special.

MR. BLONDE: What's something special, take ya in the kitchen and suck your dick?

NICE GUY EDDIE: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

MR. WHITE Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long fuckin time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.

MR. BLONDE: What if she's too busy?

MR. WHITE: The words "too busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.

NICE GUY EDDIE: Excuse me, Mr. White, but the last thing you need is another cup of coffee.

MR. WHITE: These ladies aren't starvin to death. They make minimum wage. When I worked for minimum wage, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tipworthy.

NICE GUY EDDIE: Ahh, now we're getting down to it. It's not just that he's a cheap bastard--

MR. ORANGE: --It is that too--

NICE GUY EDDIE: --It is that too. But it's also he couldn't get a waiter job. You talk like a pissed off dishwasher: "Fuck those hahahahas and their fucking tips."

MR. BLONDE: So you don't care that they're counting on your tip to live?

And this non- college bullshit you're telling me, I got two words for that: "Learn to fuckin type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big fuckin surprise.

i work in a restaruant, i'm a chef, so i get to listen to people bitch about bad tips all day. here's how it is.

if my server is good i always leave AT least 20% the reason i like to tip high i because it's these's people livelyhoods, also if you frequent there, the next time you come back they will remember you and you will get twice the service.

5 dollars on 31 is a good tip, it's right around what thy would hope to get on the meal, 10 - 15%. surprisingly enough, about 50% of people don't tip more than 5%.

so bottom line, at least 10% even if the service is sub standard, anything more than that, judge it for yourself. how much was their attentiveness worth to you?

Its crazy in the US. Those waiters make more on tips in 1 day than then average waiter makes in Holland for 3 days of working.

New York 3 days:
75 on taxi's
200 on food
500 in the stripclub
300 in tips

Just 1 tip already makes that up and they get like what 20 tips a person a night??

We had a waitress screw us over the other day, and she was terrible service too.

There was several people at our table, and an $8 tip was left. Then we get up to the register and notice "tax" crossed out on the bill and "tip" written in. So that bitch got a double tip, and I noticed she scooped up that $8 pretty quick too.

I wonder how often this happens where people don't pay attention to the receipt and leave a tip on the table too?

In the stripclub in ny this stupid ass waitress dropped all out drinks. Bags, cigarettes, everything was wet.
Anyway, she came back with new drinks. Bill was $39 so i gave her 40 and said keep the dollar.
She looked at me and said, this is all youre gonna tip me? I said yes, i shouldnt have tipped you anything but instead ask you for new cigarettes. She left while saying she wouldnt help us anymore.

In a nightclub i ordered 1 drink, 6 bucks, gave 10, she kept the 4 bucks without asking me.

This tipping thing in America maybe once was usefull but now its completely fucked up.

there are soo many servers that walk home with 30-50 bucks a day and are on their feet for 8 hours in and out of a sweety kitchen and dealing with people most of you wouldnt even stoop to spit on

We dont tip down here but still get good service. You get what you pay for though, cheap restaurants mean avg service, and expensive restaurants often mean better service.

I worked as a waiter for a few years a while back and some customers can be true assholes with their stupid fucking demands.

a buck a bag
$5-10 for groceries
18-20% at restaurants and for really good service it's always ok to give more

I always tip 15%. My philosophy is, if I can afford eating out, I can afford to tip, and its a nice thing to do. Good karma, and as people said - if you go back, they'll remember you. Maybe its how I was brought up.

If you can't afford the 15%, you probably shouldn't be wasting money on eating out in the first place *shrug*

Thats what its like here, no one expects it, and if you do leave the change they look at you wierd. Also most often the tip here will go to the owner not the server. Here = Australia btw.

The times I've been to the US I have had good service 50% of the time, the other 50% its been shit, but it feels like you have to tip no matter what. I can understand tipping at restaurants, but I dont understand why you have to tip cab drivers? They get really shitty if you dont tip, even if they did nothing for you, half of them dont even say hello! Shit, in Australia if you give them a couple of bucks they will say thank you multiple times as you leave the car.

the cab company or the lease of the cab can take up to 60% of the fare THEN they still have to pay gas on top of that and some even still have to pay thier own insurance

$1 tip for a cabbie is good on up to a 15-20 fare

$2-3 for more

I had a buddy in high school who would get his rocks off fucking with pizza delivery guys. He would order pizza that is worth 15.80 and give the guy 16.00 payment... meaning he is giving 20 cents tip.

Anyway, my buddy quit his shenanigans when he saw pubic hair inside his next pepperoni pizza. Unfortunately... he saw it on the last slice remaining when much of the cheese was stripped and he saw the pubic hair.:helpme

Thanks, I never know how much to give to cabbies, but seems like no matter how much I give they are never happy, they have that pissed off look. The last convention in Miami was the worst for cabbies, I think we must of had 20+ cab rides and only 1 half decent driver that actually deserved his tip and was grateful for it.

But many of them don't claim it, I know people that didn't claim $200 in tips a night if they made that, the only tips they claimed were credit card tips! So the government doesn't tax on everything!!
