Denmark’s 29,000 Doctors Declare Circumcision of Healthy Boys an “Ethically Unacceptable” Procedure Offering no Meaningful Health Benefits


Except within the small Muslim and orthodox Jewish communities, people in Denmark wonder why on Earth any parents would want to have their precious newborn child held down to have a part of his healthy, yet immature, penis cut off. According to a nationally representative poll from the summer of 2016, 87% of Danes favor a legal ban on non-therapeutic circumcision of boys under the age of 18 years. So far, politicians have been hesitant, but increasingly willing to listen.

Doctors and medical organizations in Denmark, the other Nordic countries and, with one notable exception, elsewhere in the Western world agree that circumcision of healthy boys is ethically problematic. It is considered an operation seriously and patently at odds with the Hippocratic oath (”first do no harm”) and one that is in conflict with a variety of international conventions, most notably the U.N. Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

The one Western country that is out of sync with its international peers is the United States, whose federal health authorities and national associations of pediatricians, obstetricians, family physicians and urologists endorse and perform most of these medically unnecessary operations in the country. Amputation of healthy infant foreskins constitutes the single most common surgical procedure in the United States – a several hundred million dollars a year industry.

It's not just the people though, doctors do the exact same thing. They had this done to them so they invent clinical reasons to continue a practice that serves no purpose. It derives from religious practices, that should be the first flag for most of you. Female circumcision is considered barbaric by everyone here--where is the difference here? it is the same skin involved.

Totally agree on that. The same applies to a female genitally circumcision as well. If someone wants to "mod" his/her body (cut off some part of flesh or remove bones, make piercing/tattoo, add some scars or implant various objects under the skin) - that ok, just become an adult and abuse your own body as much as you want, you are even free to kill yourself if you like it. But doing those barbarian things on kids w/o a medical reason is a pure criminal offense IMHO.

Your list is mostly nonsense, and you don't explain why circumcising women is considered mutilation, but circumcising men isn't--but then I've never seen any pro-circumcision advocate explain their way around that, except for vague mumblings about religious traditions, etc. Also, circumcision is done on very young boys who obviously can't give their consent to what is a medically unnecessary, elective procedure--how is that ethically acceptable?

I see this discussion coming within 5 years. If other people aren't tolerant to the traditions and history of a country they come to, there will be no respect for theirs. The circumcision sufficiently decreases the sensitivity of genitals (not even mention it makes masturbation w/o a lube very difficult), so there is no difference between male and female circumcision - both made to decrease pleasure of sexual act.
