This isn't easy for me to say, just wanted to chime in and say I've been a member here for a long time, but forgot my password and emailed Lensman several times then created another account.

I don't post much. But I'd like to request people ease up on the "Retard" "Tard" etc. comments, my daughter is 4 years old and she's mentally challenged, and it bothers me to see this kind of attitude here, even knowing that it's GFY.

BTW, the pictrues of retarded kids is very mean, IMHO.

It would be appreciated.

#1 I don't see mentally challenged children and or adults as retarded, they are just that mentally challenged.

#2 I can't see any mother or father who has a "mentally challenged" child refer to other mentally challenged children as "retarded kids."

I'm not even sure why "retarded" is such an issue. All "retardation" means is "slowed down." To me, "mentally challenged" is the ridiculous term. When will people learn it's the INTENT behind the word which is really offensive, not the term itself. (Take the current usage of the word "nigga" for example.)

There is nothing wrong with describing a picture of a retarded kid as a "picture of a retarded kid". That is what the words mean. Retarded isn't an insult (although some people use it that way). Why shouldn't someone who has a retarded child use the word 'retarded'? Why does the use of that word make you doubt DearAbby has a retarded child? Do you doubt that a black person who uses the word "******" isn't really black?

I may be incorrect here, but I don't think DearAbby was objecting to the use of the word "retarded". I think he was only objecting to the incorrect use of it as a insult towards a stupid person.

heh... as much as you'd like everyone to stop using those terms, it won't happen. and reading those words is probably hard, but as a parent you need to be strong and learn to understand the context that is behind most of those remarks. usually i'll call people gay or queer, but i'm not referring to their sexuality. when people call someone a retard, in most cases they mean the person said something stupid or acted annoying n' what not. hardly do people sincerely believe a person is mentally handicapped when they throw that slang around.

so with that said, the only thing that should matter to you is that you know your kid and the people who use those terms don't. if you can practice understanding that concept, then reading / hearing those remarks won't bother you much at all.

I definitely empathize with you but I would say take in context. People use words loosely around here and don't mean much by it.....asking them to stop using "retard" or "tard" is like asking them to stop looking at porn. It's not going to happen.

You're better off just ignoring it, recognizing that people don't really mean anything malicious by it.
