Anyone Have a Reef Tank?

Anyone else out there have a reef tank? I have a 300Gal reef with mostly SPS and a few LPS and soft corals. I made a place to check it out :)

I have a 140 gal salt tank. Thought about doing a nice corner reef tank one with an arc'd front, but right now I don't have a decent place to put one.

That's awesome. I had my 300Gal custom made to fit in the wall of my office. It's a work in progress..and a money pit :Graucho

A couple of years ago. It sits in my entry area against a halfwall that divides the entry from the formal dining room. I had the cabinet custom made to match the height of the half wall.

Love it. I spent 3 years designing and installing custom marine tanks professionally in Toronto. Had my own for ages, but it takes time, patience, energy and MONEY.

Nice tank, PK!

haha. yeah.. there's 4 of them...two on each side of the china hutch. Took me forever to find something that fit in that area that looked decent on a 10 foot wall.

hmm. so do you actually sit at your dining table, or just imagine yourself sitting? ;) *smoochies*

PersianKitty 01-27-2003 09:30 PM

Another pic. This one was when the tank was first cycling...hence lack of fish. There were only two in there at the time.

haha.. I've used the dining table in that room a handful of times in the last 5 years. For the most part we use it to play games on.

You need some live rock in there.

Interlude 01-27-2003 09:32 PM

Had a 100 gallon tank for a while, fully cycled and filled to the brim with critters. Ate up so much time and money that I had to part with it. It's unfortunate, the thing was beautiful but soured me on the hobby for years.

Before I moved to phoenix we sold our 90 gal reef to my high school for a few grand. A few grand didn't nearly cover the costs but still cool none the less. My favorite thing about a reef tank is its ability to run itself filtration wise. Once a balance is achieved the damn thing runs itself. No more water changes, no filters, no maintenance. The tank was running stable with a about 120 lbs of live rock, a plenum (sp?) , with periodic skimming. Can't wait to get back into it!

reef tank is a totally different creature. I wouldn't be able to have the puffer, triggers or tangs that I have now. They'd kill live rock.

TeraBabes 01-27-2003 09:38 PM

Impressive stuff... just might have to get one in the new house. I have the perfect spot for it too....

Of course you could...it would just mean more maintenance. I just cringe when I see dead coral in a marine tank. :)

Eh? Corals are a different story... triggers will eat invertibrates for breakfast, so it limits what you can stick in there.

wow thats a sweet setup you have there. We used to have a 100gal corner tank and would take our boat out to local reefs and catch new fish to put in it every few months.

what kind of fish do you have in there now?

wethoney 01-27-2003 09:50 PM

Right now there is:

2 purple tangs
1 Yello tang
1 domino damsel
1 blue damsel
1 madarin goby
1 soho tang
15 green chromis
1 Clarkii Clown
1 Percula Clown
1 "blue" tang
1 Unicorn Tang....

I think that's everyone :)

A hawaiian puffer, a purple tang, niger trigger, clown trigger, couple of clowns, a harwike wrasse, a squirrel fish, and an achilles tang. A bit low on fish right now. I need to decide what I want and add a couple more.

wethoney 01-27-2003 09:51 PM

I know.. I had a "meltdown" a while back when I added to much live rock all at once. I'm slowly building it back up.
