Moving to Canada?
 

I'm an American citizen (living in England and married to an Englishman, with all the visas that apply) looking to possibly move to Canada. Anyone have any info on how easy/hard it is for Americans and/or English moving to the fair country of Canada? I have lots more questions about housing costs, healthcare, crime rates, etc and how they vary from territory to territory (for example I've heard BC is nice but I know very little about it) but don't want to get too much information if it is going to be an impossible move in the first place.

Thanks in advance for ANYTHING anyone can tell me about this.

Money should not be some worry, by no doubt, if you can afford to live in England then you can afford to live in Canada.

halifax, ns is cheap to live, weather isn't too bad but its a smaller city. about 100k or so.

its kinda like the states, except we watch hockey and if you get a cold you just go to a doctor and it doesn't cost anything.

First of all, they are know as provinces mostly, except for the Yukon, North West and the newest, Nunavet, which, because of population, are still referred to a territories.

I moved from Ontario which has a very high cost of living. The hydro(power-electricity rates )are skyrocketing because of de-regulation-one of the many reasons I would not live there now at all.

The best place to live is Alberta, with no sales taxes, BC or my home province of Saskatchewan, which can be very cold, but the cost of living is still quite low.

Um, hockey I can take or leave. I didn't know that Canada had a system similar to the NHS we have here. Interesting to know.

PROVINCES!!! That was the word I was searching for when I said territories. This baby is sucking my brain away, I'm certain.

That is another thing. We don't mind the cold too much, especially if there are mountains nearby. I'd rather be cold than hot.

after sept 11/01 canada decided that since the attacks were on US domestic flights and the terrorists were residents of the USA that we would now close our immigration boarder to all US citizens since we don't know if people comming from the USA are terrorists or not.

BC is the Place to move, we have the Best Scenery, The Ocean,
Awesome Outdoor activities ( name it we got it ).
My family moved here from Wales ( years ago ) and had No problems. I'de reccomend BC to anyone thinking of moving to Canada. Have a good weekend eh !

I am an American citizen legally living in Canada on a work visa. Getting this was not as easy as we thought. You have to come in under the NAFTA guidelines and they are pretty strict regarding people's professional situation. We were denied 4 times before we finally were given our visas. Other then thats it fairly easy to get in as long as your not a criminal. Just be sure you have all your paperwork straight in regards to the guidlines listed under nafta for your profession. You can get a copy of the NAFTA handbook online or at any North American immegration office.

Thanks Rich, but I'm probably going to be classified as 'unemployed' or 'housewife'. I'll be helping my hubby with his webmastering/site design/general stuff on a part time basis from home but mostly I'll be looking after our new baby and cooking and cleaning and other stuff housewives do. Dunno how that will affect my eligibility. With my husband being English it may change things a bit. I'll have to do some serious research.

Rich, are you working for a Canadian company or are you self employed? I wonder if it's easier to get in as a person who owns your own company or one who is working for an existing Canadian company.

Cost of living is cheap here as well except for the tax H.S.T 15%
Health care is good here the Dr.s just came off strike!! They have a great childrens hospital here called the Janeway.

Weather is ok we are right on the ocean so it gets a bit damp here every now and then and some fall seasons we get lots of rain.

I've traveled all across Canada, and I can say that the best place to live is Vancouver (or possibly Victoria), both are in BC.

After living my entire life and traveling throughout Canada, I can confidently say that British Columbia has the most to offer out
of all of the provinces. You will never run out of things to do here. Cost of living depends on which part of B.C you choose to
live in, but overall is fairly reasonable. It has only rained here about 3 - 4 days in the last month. How many other provinces can say that. While the east coast is out shoveling their snow I think I'll go out and fire up the barbecue!
