Whats the worst you've ever been ripped off?

I'd say that the worst thing that happened to me was getting jacked for about $3000+ in design work over 4 years ago (probably should have taken half up front, but it was a referral from a credible friend)

I am still friends with that person that referred the scamster, but I won't do large jobs like that without cash up front any more..

His name was Prentice Schuetz .. From Canada, Still not paid to this day...

I told him I was gonna come up to canada and break his legs before he dissapeared off the face of the earth, prolly someone else killed him, cuz word is he owed over $200,000 to other people, and his wife divorced him and took all his shit...

What is the worst ripoff thats ever happened to you? Who did it? And was it ever made right?

Signed to become partner in a rather large marketing firm while I was still under 18, got ripped from my profit share when company sold because contract was null underage...

Learned a lesson.

hmm... IANAL, so i very may be wrong, but being 18 doesn't nullify contracts, I was under the impression that it just means the party under 18 years old can break it at any time without repercussions.

munki 05-10-2006 11:30 AM

Few thousand dollars of lawyers, which I didn't have money for at the time, found otherwise.

I made a few bucks off the project, and got some great clients that stuck with me through it all...

But lost out on plenty.

That was the worst? I can see how devestating it was at 14, but how does that compare to anything you've lost nowadays? How much were the tickets?

LOL... this reminds me of a time I tried to buy some weed when I was 16 out in San Francisco.... It was the bait and switch shit, the dude showed us the real weed, and when we did the deal, he left a fake bag of moss at the drop spot... I chased his ass but he was quick as fuck..

Was soooo pissed... glad I don't smoke weed any more, too much risk if you have to buy from someone you don't know...

Nismo 05-10-2006 11:58 AM

Well, my mom got ripped off of over $200k from a fraud bandit in early 2004 and had to go into bankruptcy because of it. I've been helping her out every month since, so i've been affecting by it tremendously. Long story short, feds won't go after the guy since aparently they have their hands full with terrorism and other bigger shit.

Matiz 05-10-2006 11:59 AM

I bought tickets on ebay for about $700 and got an empty envelope. Fortunately, about 4 month later my lawyer got the money back.

CherryLipsRosa 05-10-2006 12:09 PM

$1000 that i gave an ex boyfriend and never saw him or the money again. He left to Chicago and never came back lol
I never got even although i just needed to give up his name to a few sources and he would have been in deeper trouble but i did not have it in me to hurt him.

In mainstream life, 10K retirement fund fiasco.

In adult about $700. Bought a Little Red riding hood costume from an online lingerie shop (the model just HAD to have it) and they stole my CC and charged it up to $700 before I caught it.

Degenerate 05-10-2006 12:35 PM

Car stolen right from my home... so bummed.

Degenerate 05-10-2006 12:36 PM

It wasn't that bad, now that I think about it, insurance ended up covering it all, but its such a violating experience. I never slept the same when I owned that house.

Nope, worked the company while I was still in school. Actually got school credit for it too, allowing me take off an extra period earlier to handle my shit.

Good times

A dodgy offshore bank that I signed up for when I badly needed funds to buy a new server for a rocketing site, at the time I didn't have a Paypal account and USD cheques took 4-6 weeks to clear.

The first I knew about them closing was when my ATM card was declined. They ended up with around $USD2500 of my balance that was never recovered.

potter 05-10-2006 12:51 PM

I've been ripped off on plenty of design jobs in the past. I now require 50% upfront, and then the rest prior to upload. Now if people disapear, or change their minds a billion times about the project I'm not screwed.

potter 05-10-2006 12:52 PM

oh, and me and a partner were just recently screwed on a content deal, But it wasn't for too much money.

madawgz 05-10-2006 12:54 PM

hmmmm. sent $ for an application 2000$ and the guy dissapeared...

I haven't needed to worry about 50% up front with most clients as of yet, but I do keep me failsafes none the less.

Most people given a chance are decent... can't let a few assholes kill it for everyone.

Snake Doctor 05-10-2006 12:56 PM

I think like most people here the biggest ripoff was what Ibill did to us.

ajrocks 05-10-2006 01:19 PM

I got ripped off 12K from #@$#!@@#@.

jjjay 05-10-2006 01:26 PM

wired guy is surprisingly quiet in this thread... :winkwink:

rants 05-10-2006 02:16 PM

When I was 18 I was SO desperate to move out of my parents house, I didn't have a car, support or anything and was SO desperate that I paid this girl at my work around 2k for a car that I never even SAW (who knows if it even existed), everytime I got a check I would give her half of it.

I was really ignorant and basically didn't know shit back then. And when I called the apt manager to see if the car was even parked there, the girl threatened me, that she would have all these gangsta guys come down and I would have to go get my guy friends or whatever... This was around 10 yrs ago...

I couldnt take it so I quit work and never came back.
