how hard is it to teach yourself VB?

Just curious... Im tired of having to rely on others and was wondering how hard it would be...

riddler 09-14-2005 09:43 PM

do you speak english? if yes.. then you can code VB..

VB is so fucking simple to learn, Id say give it a good week of playing around with it you could make anything you really need except some complexed shit which you probably wouldnt want to code in VB to begin with :P

tapatio 09-14-2005 10:35 PM

What would you want to use VB for?

Doctor Dre 09-14-2005 10:43 PM

Very easy to do simple stuff with it ... ;) will give you a better understanding on how stuff works too (basic) if you aren't exactly a "geek"

woj 09-14-2005 10:43 PM

it's probably one of the easiest languages you can learn...

Stacey_JoinRightNow 09-14-2005 10:57 PM

yeah visual basic is so simple that's why its called basic because of its functions... its windows based that's why is easy to you to work with the buttons and so forth... and using vb to database is easy too... :)

Easiest way is to learn off other code and the msdn pages that come with VB are great, Learn VB6 and not .NET for now.. Once you have learned 6 then move to .NET.. .NET is harder to learn as its a little more complexed than previous versions..

www.pscode.com has virtually any code to any kind of program you can imagine, Download what you need learn from it and do it in your own code, Or use the code but do not release it with out permission from the rightful owner..

Hope that helps.

pr0 09-14-2005 11:09 PM

.net much harder than say vb6?

brand0n 09-14-2005 11:11 PM

you could teach yourself in under a month

I thought it was a different step from VB6 to .NET.. Not "much" harder per-say but still a step, Stuff is more integrated rather than controls, Winsocks is no longer drag and drop its all code.. Alot of cool shit but not good for a beginner to start in, thats my opinion anyway..

If you got vb6 api aspect you can get VB.Net down in no time, Hell if you learn any .NET learn C# its like C,VB,Java mixed in one.. its rather nice, very sleek..

You can learn pretty much any language with very little problem.

However, you're either a programmer or you're not. If you're not, probably best just to stick to what you do well, and pay someone else to do what they do well. :)

talent? no.. logic? yes..

its all concept, once you learn the concept of a language you can do it.. just have to have the patients to learn it, thats why i never went far learning C because i ran out of wooden boards to slam my head thru :winkwink:

Didn't mean you were a moron noob.

I used to be a project manager, in charge of a team of 6 programmers. Real coders write code in their sleep. It comes out of them like symphonies do great composers. What takes a non coder, who is still technically profecient, 2 hours to write, they will spit out in 30 minutes.

What I'm saying is, unless that's who you are, a programmer at heart, you'll PROBABLY make more money doing what you do best, and letting someone else do the programming. Time is your most valuable asset. Now, if your time is not valuable, then well knock yourself out. :winkwink:

I already told you I didn't know you had a daughter, and as such it wasn't specifically directed at her. If you don't like that by all means you attack me. :thumbsup

He has an uber valid point though, dependant on your time, patience and aptitude, learning to program can be useful, or not.

hmm actually no...some people are much better coders than others....

it's just like design...you can learn basic techniques...but you're still not a designer...

some people will see a solution/algorithm to a problem MUCH faster and easier than others... else, anyone with some free time and a book would apply for a job at microsoft....

I know what you mean for C though... I was studying C/C++ exclusively in college (for 3 years)...that's a lot of headaches...

well said...

good coders think in algorithm....no need for a specific language..once you know a language...you can learn others..it's just different syntax...the basic principle is always the same though!...you look at a problem, break it into smaller problems, and solve these smaller problems...some people are just MUCH better at doing this than others...

I saw some better coders (than me that is) in college, and it's impressive to see how they come up with good solutions FAST...I was still among the good ones though ;)

Whatever you like. I told you I made the comment in poor taste, out of emotion. I really didn't think you did have any kids. If I had known, and meant it specifically, I would have said "I hope your daughter ..." and not a more broad "I hope your children ...". If you can't accept that and move on, then fine, I guess you attack me, that's your perogrative.

tapatio 09-14-2005 11:39 PM

What woudl you possibly need to write VB for now days?
