What's better to turn off your computer each night or leave it on?

If you leave it on then it's hot in the morning.

If you shut it down then it has to go through the boot up process and can cause ware.

Spunky 08-30-2005 06:01 PM

I have been turning it off after each use for years..I have no problems.I do it also as a preventative from potential hacks. You never know what this spyware shit does

shermo 08-30-2005 06:03 PM

I leave mine on... I have noticed a higher power bill though. :\

FrankHolland 08-30-2005 06:08 PM

off, because 8+ hours is alot each day if you turn your computer off.. hardware will last longer for sure.

u-Bob 08-30-2005 06:08 PM

I never turn them off.

kaori 08-30-2005 06:09 PM

Not the powersupply and motherboard at least .

A guy that owns a big computer chain store here (good friends of my parents) told me to leave it on .

So I'm leaving it on .

eamedia 08-30-2005 06:11 PM

remote desktop dosent seem to work well if the computer is off..

Jarmusch 08-30-2005 06:19 PM

If you leave it on, it will cause less stress on the components (no constant expanding from heating up/cooling down). The only downside of leaving it on all the time is higher electricity bill and a dustier interior.

baddog 08-30-2005 06:21 PM

the worst thing you can do to electronics is turn them off and on

lgranata 08-30-2005 06:33 PM

I agree, always on :thumbsup

chaze 08-30-2005 06:34 PM

I leave my desktop on but shut down my laptop, it's too hot in the morning if I never shut it down.

Rinaldo 08-30-2005 06:40 PM

laptop ... I have to turn it off to bring it home

adonthenet 08-30-2005 06:49 PM

i dont shot down for monthes both laptop and the desktop one

Elli 08-30-2005 06:51 PM

The boot-up process (I heard and read) hasn't had much wear and tear on a computer for years. It's far better to save the power bill and let the poor thing cool down for a few hours than keep it on to save a bit of wear and tear. Do you leave your car running all night, too? :) I know it's extreme, but still...

Leaving it on is better.

pornguy 08-30-2005 06:55 PM

I usually shut them down, but leaving them on will not hurt them either. But reboot almost every day.

BusterBunny 08-30-2005 06:58 PM

on: due to the sheer fact the hum of the fan soothes me to sleep..

He's in the business of selling computers, not biased to advise whatever would bring more business to his store :food-smil

I've got two computers right now. One is five years old and the other 1 year old. Both have been on since purchase without problem. I reboot once every 3 or 4 days.

Yngwie 08-30-2005 07:21 PM

I keep mine on all the time. For those who say they turn it off because of hackers why not just diable you network connection? hackers can't get you if you're not connected.

higher electricity bill? I pay my own electricity and my pc barely uses anything.

Veterans Day 08-30-2005 07:23 PM

all 10 of mine have been running 24-7 for god knows how long

Shoehorn! 08-30-2005 07:30 PM

I leave mine on cause I like getting up in the morning and having everything ready to go.

GoodGuy 08-30-2005 07:34 PM

Desktop computer were made to be used 8-12 hours per day.

If you guys want to leave your computer on 24 hours a day you should consider getting a server instead.

anyways, i turn mine off every night. if im not on it, it doesnt need to be on. and no, it doesnt wear & tear on a machine. i've had other machines last years with no problems and i always shut down at night.

Oliveira 08-30-2005 07:50 PM

It takes like 2-3 minutes dude :winkwink: I see more wear and tear on your hardrives constantly running and also the heat factor isn't good for it.

it's not good for electronics to be booted and turned off, even stereos now days have sleep mode :winkwink:

BlackCrayon 08-30-2005 08:05 PM

my PC has been on 24/7 since i bought it in Jan 2002.

Jace 08-30-2005 08:07 PM

a computer draws the power of basically a few lightbulbs, i think you all will be all right with the power bill

EviLGuY 08-30-2005 08:15 PM

I never turn my machine off. It's just more convenient to leave it on all the time. I set all the power saving features to on though. So the HD's spin down and everything.

.. and on a related note. I have never had a computer conk out on me yet. :thumbsup

KRL 08-30-2005 08:19 PM

I give mine a rest every 2 weeks. I think that's a good compromise.

~Ray 08-30-2005 08:24 PM

I leave mine on, but turn off access to the net from my cable modem while I'm asleep.

woj 08-30-2005 08:29 PM

put it in "sleep" mode every night...

knought 08-30-2005 08:44 PM

I usually turn it off after use to save electricity... :)

flashfire 08-30-2005 08:58 PM

I turn it off...never had a problem

think of all the wasted electricity

Max Cannon 08-30-2005 09:03 PM

I keep it on cause its cold in my home and I have no central heating

PbG 08-30-2005 10:21 PM

Depends on how often you use it. The one I use all day everyday stays on 24/7 except when Im ooo. The one I use for video editing stays off except for when I'm editing video. My laptop stay off till I'm travelling etc. If you use it everyday most of the day leave it on to minimize wear and tear on the switch. If you only use it for 1-4 hours a day or less then turn it off to minimize wear and tear on the whole system.

reynold 08-31-2005 01:51 AM

i only turn off my computer on weekends.

BV 08-31-2005 01:56 AM

it's especially good to leave them on if you have a high humidity
