The emo social group does not listen to Green Day anyway. They are into bands like Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, New Found Glory, Something Corporate, etc... Pretty much emotionally charged rock that can be very unique at times.

Today's emo is pretty much the modern day equivalent of the 90's skater grunge culture and the alternative music they listened to.

Emo style of dress is very reminisant of that also, only more attention is paid to not looking so homeless and their clothes actually fit them.

And for the record, if Kurt Cobain was alive today he personally would be considered an emo. So it's not just for dorks.
