western digital drives appear to be a piece of crap
Until now I had only seen some people say to avoid them... now I've experienced it directly. I bought my wife a new computer (so I couldn't choose the brand) and after FDISK and FORMAT C: /U the fucking thing just clicks repeatedly when you power on, and the BIOS reports a drive error!
At least it's dying before I install everything, rather than quietly taking out her data in a month. I'm going to ask for a different brand when they replace it. :321GFY |
I always liked WD. and their warranty is honored for like 5 years or something (last I looked).
|
Western Digital drives suck. We refuse to use them AND also refuse to use IBM (now Hitachi) Deskstar drives. They WILL fail miserably.
Head clicking/clunking is a sure sign of a head crash. If I can find them, I'll post a photo of what that looks like... Basically the head ends up touching the surface of the disk and literally scrapes off the metallic coating leaving a see through area on the disk platter. When the head gets to that part, it doesnt know what to do so the controller keeps pulling it back and forward in attempts to get a bearing on things... |
they are bad and have failed on me more than once

I better back up things right now  so , tell us what you would like to suggest ? Seagate is any good ? |
i have a 120 and 2x 200gig in WD.
about 2-3 weeks ago one of the 200s crashed out on me, corrupted all my data, and the partition tables disapeared. This week the other 200 is starting to currupt data as well. Im never using WD again |
Back in the day WD used to make good drives, and all my Maxtor drives would crash and burn, now it's the exact opposite.
|
Maxtor or Seagate.
:-) Photos coming now, I found them... YOU WILL TRIP OUT WHEN YOU SEE HOW VULNERABLE YOUR DATA IS.... LOOKIE HERE...... |
On the left is a good drive, on the right is the customers HOSED drive.....

MAXTOR Drives 100%

Actually, I just realised I've had experience with drives crashing before... 3 months ago one of my server drives started throwing up sector read errors. My host caught it and copied most of the data over to a new drive, so it wasn't a complete loss. It's the only time in the 4 years I've been leasing servers (currently have 5 operational) that a drive has crashed.
It was a Western Digital. |
|
Western digital bites.

i've had bad experiences with WD before, but my maxtor drives seem to be very reliable

I have this Inspiron that clutters like motherfucker, then it eventually fails if I leave it on long enough. I just put it aside and use another lappie. But maybe it's something I can fix? (assuming the prob you described goes for laptops too) :( |
The only economical way to fix this problem is to replace the hard drive.
Backup your data now EVERYONE. Learn from this. ;-) Take it from us, we see colocation customers bite it all the time because they think "ill backup when I get around to it" but that day never comes.... We backup for most of our customers, but some are either un-managed, co-located or they just wanna do it all theirselves.... No matter if you are managed or not, you need backups!!! Make local copies, put them in a bank safety deposit box and sleep well at night. Backups of backups of backups. hell, store one at grandmas house for the heck of it. |
WD died on me once... Maxtor died on me twice, I now do a monthly ghost of both my drives just to be on the safe side -_-'
|
|
guess it shows I have not had to buy a hdd in a few years
|
i agree with SplitInfinity, now im thinking of it all the failed disks of the past were WD (except a samsung)
|
Samsungs have been ok with me so far I think.. Their name does not stand out
and I know we use them from time to time... never really heard anything negative about them. |
|
On the failed drive, these are the top and bottom platters. You can see the problem got to BOTH platters. Nothing is safe.

Notice how the platter is basically made of a glass type material and coated with a mettalic coat... the head just scratches it right off the glass and the glass is now
100% clear where the head crashed.... see my finger though it? http://homepage.mac.com/suavementeho...FB7CD911D9.jpg |
i only use maxtor. never had one croak in 8 years.
|
This reminds me of like 2001 a Space Oddesy (sp?)

still have a 20gb maxtor for many years,np at all. I'll better stick to them from now on
|
Yeah stick to them. I always use Maxtors without problems.
|
This thread would be un-informative without a hot chick passing by.....

Oddly enough, I have had more maxtors go in the past two years than all other brands combined. I now only buy Western Digitals (and DeathStars on occasion). I wonder how Seagates are these days.
