Try to make friends with other business owners. I recently made a good friend, like last year. Mega successful, totally nice guy. Someone to treat as a mentor of sorts.

Anyway, best people don't know as then there's less competition. I'm very happy that there are people who go to work in supermarkets and drive lorries, and they leave webmastering for us GFYers :2 cents:

When I tell people I work from home, I'm sure they probably think I sit around beating my meat -- which is actually only about 5% of my day.

Sometimes I have to ride the train into NYC for a client meeting, and I see all of these people in suits, reading charts and graphs and I think to myself "what the fuck do these people do?"

maybe they make more money than me, but I'd shoot myself if I had to shuffle numbers for my entire life. I'd rather shovel shit in a ditch. Yes, I kind of look down on them.

My ex-brother in law worked in financial, and made a big deal about his job all of the time. He was non-stop bragging about the amounts of money going by his desk, and acted like he was doing God's work. He never asked me a single question about what I do, which is infinitely more interesting and I actually create a product. He just leeches onto money made by other people and shaves some off the top, and acts like it's some great achievement. It's fucking lazy and shows low character if you ask me.

Most people that "go into work" every day are incapable of imagining a life where you work on your own schedule and do whatever you want to do.

Neighbors that see me walk out the front door at 2 PM with bed head must assume I do nothing with my life.

i do miss wearing a nice suit everyday and having a "Girl Friday" (sorry girls, it was a real term in the old days) ...

In Baltimore County there was a rough looking guy that worked the same intersection for years, even decades. There were many people that would give him $20 every Friday or $5 every day. He was very personable but looked to be down on his luck.

There were always rumors that was not the case.

One day one of the news stations decided to follow him when he was done his day at the intersection. They followed him to a beautiful hi-rise condo building. He took the elevator to the top floor. Penthouse.

He lived with his wife. He was not ashamed or apologetic. All he'd admit to was not showering or shaving every day and wearing scruffy clothes to better look the part. He rationalized that people were giving him money because they wanted to.

Edit: Maybe 25 stories is still considered mid-rise. Whatever.

The Naked Cowboy in Times Square makes a killing. Of course he's not homeless and doesn't pretend to be.

I park my ambulance in an industrial warehouse. My neighbor is an automotive shop. The look on the mechanics face is priceless every time we leave for a shoot.

BTW I never tell anyone that asks me what I really do. I just tell them I work on computers.

Something I learned a long time ago is that when people find out you work for yourself they immediately think you don't have a "real" job even though you likely put in more hours than they do.

I actually lost a friend for a few years because of this then several years later he started working for himself and realized just how hard it was.

People think you can just drop everything and do what they want anytime they want.

People ring up all day just wanting to chat because they are taking a break from work or some such bullshit. Oh and can you just quickly do this and this cos you do nothing.

I see the same when I visit my city to deposit the occasional USD cheque. On a weekday almost everyone in the central business district is either a corporate drone, or a tourist.

The friend I had a falling out with really pissed me off. He and his wife have three kids. At the time this happened two of them were in school, but too young to be home alone and the third was at daycare all day and too young for school. One day he calls me up because he is stuck at work. He asks if I will go to his house so when the kids get off the bus someone is there and I can hang out for a couple hours until he gets off work. I do it, no problem.

A one time thing turned into another time turned into a few days a week and pretty soon he and his wife pretty much assumed that they didn't need to pay a babysitter, because I could just do this for them. When I told them I couldn't they didn't understand why. I explained that if I sit at their house 2 hours every day that is 2 hours later I have to work that night. They still didn't get it. Apparently they thought I just sat at home all day doing nothing and money just appeared. Eventually, I told them I could maybe help them out a few days per month, but I had to work and couldn't do it every day. They got pissed and thought I was being an asshole.

Fast forward seven years and my buddy gets laid off from work. He gets a chance to freelance work for a company and does so while looking for another job. One thing led to another and he ends up just working for himself and suddenly he realized it isn't just stilling at home watching TV all day.

People just think I am 'made' and don't 'work'.
I would like to keep things this way.haha
