    System problems, need a 900 mhz enema....help?

Last evening, suddenly, my computer went a bit screwy. The view on the monitor (for any and all programs) is, well, "weird" for want of a better term. The view is "flinty" and there are horizontal lines across the screen, like shadowy lines, not bold or anything. It's just weird.

    Things I've noticed lately:
    - Whenever I reboot my system, Internet explorer seems to reset to a default setting, which means I have to move (drag) the address bar back up to the top of the browser, and I have to close out the search function.

    - ICQ has been causing some problems, in that it doesn't interact with my programs all that well, especially netscape. I notice that a few hours after I launch ICQ, my programs begin to "degrade"

    What I've done so far--

    - I've uninstalled ICQ
    - I've ran all maintenance programs, defragged, and I've run a complete virus scan. All is fine in those areas.
    - I've shut down and rebooted many times.
    - checked all video, driver and monitor settings, and I've uninstalled and re-installed the video driver, I've reset the display settings and reset them back again.
    - followed the various test and instructions in the help wizard pertaining to video problems.

Nothing seems to work to correct this. I've also looked at the "system restore" function for Windows ME, but there doesn't seem to be any restore markers set previous to today for this system. There was this morning when I first checked, on the date that I bought the computer, but now I open system restore and that marker isn't there! WAAAAAAA!

    Any ideas?

Actually, the thing is still on warranty, so they'll have to eat the cost of that one

Thanks, I sort of began to suspect that, but was hoping it was something else, so's I wouldn't have to take it in. I can't wait til I get a second computer networked in here, so I can continue working when one is at the shop.

Everything except the video thing is a windows problem. If you can't reinstall from the CD. Copy all the files from the windows CD to a directory and name it winmeinstall or something like that. Make a boot disk, then delete all the directories and run setup from there.

For the video, I would need a better description.

Check to make sure it is plugged in securily -if you notice color changes with the lines - That it is probable it.

Are the lines similar to what you would see if you put two screen door together and looked through it?

The lines are like horizontal shadow-lines running all the way across my screen no matter what I'm looking at -- desktop, browser, whatever. The shadow-lines are densest near the top and bottom of the screen, but are present to some degree through 100% of the screen area. Also, I notice now when I reboot, I get a quick notice during the boot sequence that says "this monitor is not running at it's optimum refresh rate"..... But it is. I have the refresh rate set to "optimum".... very weird.

Damn I've tried a lot of stuff today to fix this shit. Nothing works. I'm trying to locate my windows me CD, but some of my stuff has been moved around here lately and I'm having trouble finding it all. Grrrrr.

It's one of those "slam forehead on keyboard" days again....

It sounds like a bad monitor to me. I have one that was acting similarly screwy. The resolution was set at 1024x768 for years but the thing started acting whacky with horizontal lines and 'squishing'. So far, I'm still using the same monitor but have it set to 800x600 (then everything is normal).

Until you can switch monitors to check that or take it back, just keep playing with your settings, light some candles, hum a chant and good luck.
