New Top Level Domains - any takers?

What do you think of these new TLDs - .xxx, .mp3, .shop, .free, .video etc. Any good? Initially I was going to register a few dozen of these, but I stopped at 10. Now I feel I've wasted the money. Are they goin to catch on?

.com is and will always be the defacto king of domain names. Sure we are running out of them, but we are still only limited by our imagination and at 15$ a pop per year that's a piece of real estate you will own for life. Invest wisely.

What I meant to say was, is it worth investing in the new domains or will they be worth nothing in the future? There's no good domains wirth taking in the com segment, but these new ones are virgin, tons of good names to be had. (These are not officially approved by ICANN, but are available for registering, which is why the risk).

It all depends what you want the domain name for - if you're looking for type-ins then of course it would be a good investment to pick up sex.xxx or porn.xxx. Obviously they won't have the type-in value of a .com so you have to factor this into the equation.

If you want the domain for SE traffic, then I believe all top level domains are equal. If you want to build a site and brand the name, then you may be better off getting a .com and to say that all the good ones are taken is ridiculous. I come accross 3 or 4 kick ass .coms each day that have expired. The only one that pops into my head right now is latinhoney.com which expired a few days ago and is still available. You can't get much better than that if you're looking to build a Latina site for example.

I think it was mentioned here on the board and then the news had a blurb on it the other night. About forcing adult sites to the upcoming .xxx domains so they can better rope off access tot he kids. Might not be a bad idea to get a few of that one to cover you're existing sites.

We have a local news guy that is the net 'expert' and on the blurb he mentioned that they'd probably redirect from the adult dot coms to the dot xxx's. I dunno alot about that sort of thing but I guess they could do it. Seems like it would also redirect the kids.

Here's the thing... people click on links, they don't really type-in....

when men get on the web for the first time, they type in a few domains... sex.com, playboy.com, pussy.com, shit like that.

The honeymoon lasts a day or two, before they realize they have to hit the search engines to really get content.

Therefore,,,, having SOME domain is better than no domain, two are better than one, three better than two, etc....

Your domains will be fine, as long as you DO SOMETHING with them. Not a waste of money.

One last thought... those TLDs are not available yet... so what you did was "pre-" register... others may have done the same. When / If they get released, you may or may not have them.


My advice, fwiw, is this.... register KEYWORD domains....

nude-amateurs-3394848.com is a great domain name, because it'll work for you in the search engines. No one will ever type it in, but it can still be clicked on.

You can register .xxx domains at http://domainnamesystems.com ... don't go anywhere else, because they have been doing it much longer than anyone else, and the others will be sued into non-existence.

Forgot to thank you for the link Skitz. We read that site over and its not pre-registration on a chance that ICANN or whatever allows the extensions but a secondary DNS server array.

Downside is the .sex and .xxx will ALL have to be behind the AVS that they have made. No way around it from what we read. So they will be making the majority of cash all around. (Which to a small degree is understandable given their cash outlay),but no doubt they won't raise the payouts to webmasters once their initials are covered.

.sex will not be avs protected as far as I undrstand it. .xxx will be. And its not a pre-registration, but I'm doubtful about the authenticity of the domain names you get, the way I see it, any company can go ahead and start giving out their own domain extensions - so AOL starts giving out theirs and all their users immediately get to see those domains, and the rest of us who have not registered using AOL get only a handful of people using our domains. Soon we will have sex.xxx pointing to various sites depending on which computer/isp you're on and how your browser is configured and which plugin you have installed. Thats what scares me.

What the hubby understood is they will be releasing some coding for the ISP's to all add to their servers to lead into this secondary DNS array and something about people will have to add their DNS numbers to their setups on the home systems (the scary part since most people haven't a clue)

But that DNS would also allow them to see the normal dot coms etc etc. We saw on about two pages out of maybe 8 that we read that both will be behind that AVS. Thats their selling point for their industry self policing. Sounds like a plan other than expecting the normal surfer who has to run to a shop to correct a lockup, attempting to change their own DNS settings. lol
