I'm pretty new to the forum. I've been a producer, "webmaster" and developer on my own site and I have some PPV distribution and so on. Been in the business for about 10 years off and on, about 2 years dedicated. I know that tossing in my comments between a couple guys arguing where it's degraded to name-calling may only get me trolled, but I'll say a few things anyway on the subject of the thread, not directed at anyone...

1) no one's psychic, and it's pretty tough to read someone's mind - particularly the mind of someone looking to rip you off. They're pretty good at NOT sounding like they want to rip you off.

2) if something seems to good to be true (like rates and availability), it usually is. I know that's a "well, duhh!" kind of comment, but worth remembering.

3) if there's no trust ...there's no point. You can't pay someone all upfront that you don't know well "enough", but the other side of the coin is true too. I'm a career creative professional, and I've worked plenty of times on "good faith" and been ripped off almost every time. I've also asked for $$ upfront and lost the work. Someone else posted that "it's a balance" ...that's true, it is.

To the original poster, I know how you feel. I was not scammed out-right, but a web company/developers I hired years ago to do an earlier version of my site, took my $3000, fucked up my sight through incompetence (not intentional malice), then refused to pay it back saying "We did the work, and billed the hours." I could have taken them to court and won, but I'd have spent that money just to get it back. I decided to call it a "$3000 education" and move on. As a result, I learned HTML5, CSS and re-wrote my own site by hand - in many ways, that was the best $3000 I ever lost. It taught me some pretty valuable lessons.

To the OP's haters, go easy ...you've made as many mistakes. There's just not a thread where everyone's flaming you for them.
