Should we discourage newbies from getting started in this biz?

This thought crossed my mind this morning. Should we stop helping newbies get started? Should we discourage them?

    One reason: competition.

The more people there are in this biz, the less money we all make. Just like back in 1996, I'd imagine that it was a lot easier to make money back then than now, due to lack competition.

The story of me getting started in this biz... hmmmmm. About 2 years ago, there was an "Internet Night" on Channel 5 television, about hackers, ebusiness and all that shit. There was also a program that took an even handed and fair view of the adult industry. I don't really remember it - but the one thing I do remember is a guy sut it front of a hotel on the most beautiful beach I'd ever seen. His words are crystal clear to me even now - "there are webmasters right now, behind me in that hotel, that are earning up to $135,000,000 per year".

That was it - it set alarm bells ringing. From that moment, I decided that I HAD to make money from the Internet - it was my cause in life.

The next day, I'm soaking in the tub and racking my brains on ways to make money. I didn't really want to do adult at first. I'm thinking, sports... nah. Internet resource sites... nah. Every idea I came across was negative, "nah" to it all. Then it hit me - celebrity! Some people go wild for celebrities. I remembered a site where I could find 20,000 celebrity addresses from all over the world and 30,000 celeb pictures, and reckoned that with it all, I could set up a membership based site.

I set about it, the first thing designing the site. I didn't have a clue what I was doing - I didn't even recognise that these pictures were unlicensed, that I could be sued... etc. So anyway, I'm half way through setting up this site and I'm looking for a billing solution.

I'd contacted iBill, and got a response. Though it looked a little difficult to me - bare in mind that I didn't even have a host back then, and was clueless about cgi. I decided that adult was the only way to go - I could get started with softcore bikini and babes stuff, and as I made my fortune, move to the Netherlands and really start the hardcore stuff. (yeah right... lol)

I set about searching for an easier solution. I found "tomsnewbiebooster.com" on a search engine. The site proclaimed "most people find us when halfway through setting up a paysite". I thought shit... these guys know what they are talking about. So I posted my first message and was welcomed with open arms. A big "hi" and "welcome" from everyone on the board. Tom is a great guy, and really did help.

If there is one thing I could remember from surfing for porn, it was "porn city" and "maximum cash". Must be the webmaster standard I thought... and got set up. I was shit scared on the MaxCash signup procedure - what the fuck are they going to do with my addess? I thought. No pain, no gain! Built a site, no traffic. Bullshit to this I thought - and got out of the business for about 6 months before I had even started.

I came back a little later after discovering Adult Check. I built the shittest AVS site in the world, using MaxCash Teen Steam as my sponsor inside. Like a dumb piece of meat, I actually had the nerve to spam the newsgroups to get traffic. It did work - 1 Adult Check signup and 1 Teen Steam signup. Great, I thoght. However, this was on my ISPs webspace at sexcandy.co.uk - they cut me off. So I moved on, building a bikini babes site at hollywood.i12.com. It's gone now - and didn't get me a signup.

Fuck! I thought - I made 2 signups and I haven't got a clue what I'm doing! I must do some research - and it started from there.

Anyway, seeing as I'm not a newbie anymore, I'm taking a chunk of what other webmasters should have had for their own income. Whenever I post to tgps, I push another webmaster off - whenever I post on a link list - I get signups that could have been had by another webmaster.

This is happening hundreds of times per day - the newbies that we all helped are getting good, and turning round and giving us a great huge bite on the ass.

The less people in this biz - the less competition - the more money for us. And that is what we are here to do... make money.

So I put forth - should we quit helping newbies, stop giving advice, and discourage them from getting into the biz?

wow ldinternet, that is a proverbial slippery slope. For that matter, why help anyone at all? Why help the experienced ones? They are taking income from you just like everyone else. Just think how much money you could make if you stopped everyone else from posting! that would be great. Or not.

The reason that people like to help each other is because, as humans we enjoy the interaction with each other. Just like I am replying to this message, for the interaction that takes place between everyone that reads and responds. If we stop helping people, then there would be almost no need for this message board.

I am not sure if there is an answer to your question. But if you have the attitude of "screw everyone else, this is just about me and the money", then ya you shouldnt help the newbies, or anyone for that matter. But I dont think that many people think that way.

    Just my 2 cents

I thought I was already doing a good enough job of this.

I've started up my first site OVER 5 years ago and I've seen many sites start out in those years. A few of them I helped out and now they're decent size and good friends of mine. People don't forget who helped them, they also don't forget who fucked them.

I've ALWAYS been one to help out a new site, giving them info and tips to help them get going. I don't look at other sites as competition, I look at us as one big webmaster family.

HOWEVER, I run 5 FREE SITES though, so if you're talking on a level of owning paysites, maybe that'd be a different story. I'm not in that boat, so I don't know. I feel that there's enough money to go around.

I think that "competion" is a thing which is something close to impossible to control.

If You make money - people eventually find out how and as soon as they have found out they try to do the same.

Now the point is that it is very important how they try and that's why I think forums are a great place.
Becase as long as You cant stop newbies from coming to Your biz You better teach them how to play by rules and what are the advantages of playing by rules, how to play by rules on one hand and to make money on the other hand. If You wont help them - they wont stop trying to earn their buck that easy. Instead I think half of them will do things which they shouldn't (CP, spam etc...) which will hurt You in the very end because chaos hurts everyone.

I've had a couple of friends ask me about getting into the business recently and i told them not to bother. Once I explain how much work there really is in this, they decide not to do it. I wouldn't want to be starting in it now. If I see someone who really seems to want to do the work and learn the ropes I will help them. They'll learn it one way or another anyway. It's the ones who do it for a week, get two signups and quit that I don't bother with.

some guys and ladies out there know a very good way to discourage newbies and kick them out of the industry. They use the magic phrase "Go now for paid hosting and submit to tgps".....the newbies go,burn their ass since they don't know how to handle the matter and finally they leave having a huge hosting bill waiting for them.

                          lol,
well competition makes internet a better place, it's the strongest motivation for webmasters to improve their sites/services, to make better designs, scripts, support and have less BS on their site. Without it the adult industry or any other business would be a chaos.

Idinternet, good topic bro, and a good little "origen of..." tale. Stuff like this is why so many of us read GFY daily.

I don't think discouraging people is the way to go. I agree with Rivux, one of the things that makes this business such a good one is we do cooperate to succeed. I mean look at my top referrers and you'll see my competition. CEN sells its exit traffic to Maxcash. There's an attitude of, "if I can't sell 'em anything, maybe you can" that profits us all.

12clicks - I don't think your discouraging newbies, maybe discouraging them from arguing with you (or fucking with your programs).

I think Slick's hitting the nail on the head here. In the free site biz, friends are very valuable. Like him I've helped out lots of guys, and they've always made me glad I did.

Also without newbies, we wouldn't make any referral $.

And with or without help from us, some will succeed and some will give up. If we're helpful the ones that succeed will remember us.

Nothing like turning around and giving back right Idle?

I have no problems helping new webmasters, breeding the next generation. From what I gathered, using YNOT as a basis, I'm 7th generation of adult webmaster.

If you rely on TGP's and Link Lists to make any money in this business, you are nothing more than a Newbie yourself.

Don't kid yourself, there's more to this business than you think.

12Clicks said it best himself if you read up... You just have to understand what he's saying.

All adult webmasters getting into this business now are already being discouraged. I remember when I started out, I surfed the newbie message boards, and everyone then kept on saying, don't bother, too much work, and you'll never make any money.

Anyways, it's so competitive, that's it's very tough for anyone who understands the industry to make money. There's a lot of investment, hard work, and it really is easier to just get a 9-5 job. But I think we should help out others. There's always going to be someone who slips through the cracks and figures out how to make money, but for almost everyone it will take work. I think we should all help each other out, but not give away everything we know, so not to saturate the industry.

All of my mates have asked about stating an adult site at somepoint.

After telling them about ftp, search engines and gallery submissions they starting looking confused.

When I tell them I put in 16 hour days when not contracted in my 'normal' profession they just forget the idea altogether.

If someone actually goes head and tries to build a site - i will help in anyway I can - they have half an idea of how much work it's going to take and are going to get traffic at somepoint, hell - chances are they might hit on a good idea and do better than me (NOT difficult!) - and that's when they remember who helped them in the first place

hehe,it is really funny Idinternet :-) I have heard guys complaining for bandwidth bills 1000+ ,we should not forget that many newbies go for $5/gig! You,old webmasters out there, don't do that to newbies, it's better to send them to a drug dealer than to few tgps!!

well i think that newbies should be motivated...
the problem are the newbies going in for a quick buck....they squatt all the freehosts with shitty pages breaking all the basic rules....free hosts should make a rule that you can get a free space only if the guy proves his motivation for the bizz like having a payhosted freesite or being introduced by another known webmaster...
this would avoid the problems with guys cheating sponsers and tgps....

when will we have an "adult webmaster license" wich would be required to get a free hosting space...?

i know its an utopy but it would be nice to clean up the industry from "parasites" who make our work harder and harder everyday...
if only competent and honest webmasters were in this biz the surfers would trust the adult industry a little more and hesitate less before signing up for a membership...
look at all the shitty 2 pages sites behind the AVS...one should be dumb to signup for a pass when the quality is far better on free sites and tgps... and believe me the word of mouth spreads fast amongst the porn surfers....ebven in france we had a famous magazine saying that internet porn was shitty and they even gave urls to password sites...it was a well known computer magazinbe named ....i let you guess...."YAHOO Internet Life"

                                          what a shame

more over to the sponsers...they only should allow recognized webmasters to advertize them...
like in the tourism industry where they had to clean everything up...their industry was falling appart because too many customers got scammed...they decided to hit...now you have to have a licence to sell plane tickets and travels...you can see everywhere "authorized sales agent for Thai airways , china airlines " etc...
would be nice to get an "authorized sales agent for amateur pages, maxcash, gammae, ars, topcash " etc....

                                            just a dream.......

As a "newbie" let me just say that there is no such thing as a fast buck.

As for motivation - I agree too many rush in and don't take the time to develop a business and in the short run there're gone. Hurting themselves and not the industry. To other newbies - If you're not going to take the time to do it right don't do it.

I started last December. I spent my first month researching on the net and with my lawyers ALL the legal aspects of what I was about to do. Followed by lurking these and other boards, reviewing and signing up for sponsor programs, looking for content, reviewing other sites, scripts and developing my sites. Finally this month (May) I launched them. And I know I will be redefining them, dropping sponsors, looking for links and new sponsors for years to come.

As for sponsors using just "authorized agent" they would loose to much money. Currently many pocket money generated by fools that fuck up promoting their sites.

New input is what makes an industry grow and evolve. So shutting out and not helping newbies doesn't do anyone any good. Just think back to when many of you started - you asked questions and you now network with many who helped you with them.

And I sure that someone is making money off my signing up for programs under their id's LOL

To those that have answered the 2 questions I have asked..........Thanks!

i'm always willing to help newbies....and i do it
...but i want to make sure thay are serious about the biz......
the fact that you got yourself some domain names is a sign that you are serious about it.....what i mean is that many people think they can start in this biz by snapping their fingers....when someone invests in domains or hosting it shows involvment ...

                                                see what i mean ?

I don't mind newbies. Hell we were all newbies at one point, right? What I hate is when they break the rules and hide behind the "I made a newbie mistake" and still think they did nothing wrong.

Badgurl, you should always end messages like this with "the moral to this story is..." because some of us are thick and don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Newbies, here's the deal. Half the people here will intentionally give you good advice; the other half will intentionally give you bad advice in an effort to help you fail. Of those who are intending to give you good help, half are misinformed and don't have a clue. Thus, if you ask a question here, there's only a 25% chance you'll get good advice. I wish you luck.

Well, I have. I still consider myself a newbie. I started in December of last year, and have been doing this full-time only 2 months. I still make a lot of mistakes, can't figure out how to get better sign-ups, etc.

BUT I do have domain names, pay for hosting (except for TGP's I learned that one and YES I was one of those someone advised to get a paid host for a TGP and ended up with a hun listings on a paid $6/GB host) THANKS GUYS! LOL. That is why the latest is on a free host, and I have a reasonable priced adult host for my sites.

I constantly try to read, to submit, and to figure out SE optimization for my sites.

I have doubled my income every month. Of course I started at like $3, but I'm happy with the growth. This month I paid my bandwidth, for all my content purchases, plus some extra in my pocket. I'm hoping to make a better profit next month.
I don't expect to get rich quick, but I do expect to make a decent living because I work hard and I'm willing to learn.

So I for one hope you contine to give advice to newbies!

Weren't we all newbies at some point? I know I have been a newbie at everything in life (and still feel a newbie in everything cuz there is always more to learn) and am grateful to all who, along the way, helped me with their experience, knowledge, advice, support, etc.
Am always willing to help if I know the answer or give advice and am not affraid to share my knowledge. I think competition is healthy for business and if a newbie I helped gets to be bigger than me, hey! that means he/she worked hard at it and made it! That can only make me smile and feel good for him/her.
If we are realistic, nobody can claim they know everything, even if you go research and never ask anyone for help, the material you are finding to research is available cuz someone was willing to share that information.
Most the people I know who are successful at what they do and share their knowledge/advice/experience willingly do so precisely because they know what they are doing and also because they know they did not get there alone. Help comes in many shapes and forms and is always rewarded in one way or another.

the problem in this biz its that most freehosts will accept people (even minors)without any refference so the guys think..."hey what the hell i'll try to make a quick buck by screwing some surfers and some sponsors...it doesn't cost me anything..."

                                                                    Badgurl,

web_mistress, are you joking??? It took you four months to get into the industry and learn enough to make a living off it?? My guess is that the current learning curve has to be 8-12 months at least at this point, but that's my guess.

Anyways, those getting in the industry now have to work to make it. There are always going to be people jumping in, using illegal content, breaking the rules and hurting it for others. But still- those are the people who will end up losing all their money in bandwidth and go back to their regular job.

Helping out anyone new is a good idea, because it will help decrease the number of people who don't know what they're doing, and that are actually hurting it for those who are making a living.

Again, it's hard work, so anyone truely willing to put in an effort should be lead in the right direction.

If any webmaster would have said anything negative about this biz, then I would have been put off and therefore - wouldn't have been taking their gallery spots, traffic and chunk of income away from them. Anything like:

                                                                            - my house has been raided twice by cops
                                                                            - my family won't speak to me because I'm a porn king
                                                                            - I have had death threats

etc would put a newbie off. But the things not to mention, is the great webmaster community, having friends and "connections" and most of all the money.

If I were to mention to a newbie any of the points above, I'm sure that it would put them off for life. I know that it would have put me off BIGTIME!

I have lurked quite a few boards like this and have learned a lot from many varied sources , illegal password sites, crackers, hackers etc most have been really friendly. My point is that as most of you point out, most newbies think they will get rich quick.....not so .let them crash and burn! I say give them advice ,if they don't act on it so what? if they do then like so many of you say,"you have a friend for life", and that can only be a good thing. friend for life =links=hits

different thread for which I do apologies but could anyone explain to me why after my very first (5) gallery subs , 2nd day (last Thursday) I received 55,000 unique hits then despite submitting roughly 10 a day (yes I know this is crap)my hits have decreased by roughly 50% per day to predicted 3500 today...any views on this would be greatly appreciated........ttfn

I've had a computer since I was 5 years old, my father taught me DOS commands & how to dial up to the local BBS. I remember downloading pictures of Rachel Welch in linegerie at a blazing 900bps =) Ever since that day...i knew computers where for me.

It wasn't until years later that I made my start in the adult industry. And since then I have made amazing progress. Helping webmasters as I go as much as possible.

I've had my good students...& my bad students. I've had webmasters that took what i had taught them & used it againts me...& just about any other problem that comes with teaching a newbie.

But even after all the problems & $ lost...I realize that some people never had a father that taught them DOS commands. Never had the oppurtunity to even get started. So even with all the bullshiit i have to put up with...I keep teaching people..I keep trying to point the newbie in the right direction, as long as he wants it bad enough.

But asside from the SOB STORY...heres my other view on wether or not to help a newbie...

Lets compare being a webmaster to being a gun owner. If there are 6,000 new webmasters out there walking around with a loaded gun..& not knowing what to do with it...Pretty soon one of us or someone we know is gonna get hit by a stray. **(Case in point: The Punk Kids spamming our free-host's or affiliate links)** So all you responsible self-appointed guru's out there...please take the time to teach some gun-safety once in awhile!
