Gruden to coach at The U?

In a story that certain to dominate collegiate headlines until there?s some official word one way or the other, the Miami Herald reports today could be the day Miami learns whether or not there?s a realistic shot at ripping Jon Gruden out of the broadcast booth and tossing him onto the Hurricanes sidelines next season.

While one report has the final details in the process of being hammered out, several members of the school?s Board of Trustees told the Herald that they are not at that point yet with Gruden.

It's a done deal, they should be announcing it today or early tomorrow.

He has coached in the college ranks before. Even last year he was visiting college campuses. He was in oregon checking out their piston offense. Anyway we will know soon enough.

Mike Leach is coming up as a possibility too but Leach says no one has contacted him.

I think if they offer enough money he will do it. Make him the highest paid college coach and I think he'd be in. Stoops makes like $4.3 million at Oklahoma.

It appears Jon Gruden isn't as interested in the University of Miami as the school's fans and boosters are in him.

UM athletic director Kirby Hocutt met with Gruden in Tampa early Wednesday morning. But according to several UM sources, a job offer was not made. It was purely an exploratory conversation.

According to a UM Board of Trustee member, ``Gruden was cordial, he listened to everything UM had to say but no offer was made. He said he didn't want to go further because he is keeping all his options open, including the NFL.

``He didn't say yes. He didn't say no. But in effect, it's probably a no because it will take months before the NFL jobs come open and UM can't wait that long.''
The search continues. Sources told The Miami Herald other candidates will be interviewed, some possibly as late as next week.
