Get some kettle bells and have a trainer come over a few times to get to using the proper form. http://www.dragondoor.com/ The dude from kettlebellboxing.com lives in Venice and will train you very well.

I've been tossing around the idea of buying a Bowflex and tossing it in the spare room, but I live all of 200 yards from a fantastic gym that's hardly ever busy in the mornings, so not really any point.

The Bowflex really seems like the perfect all around setup for a home workout to me, anyone got a good reason to stay away from them?

I think I remember seeing bowflex commercials in the 80's... I'm sure it is ok

That thing is great. We've got the 4 G7's at my gym and I love it. You can do just about anything with it. That and an adjustable bench and some dumbells would be enough for most people.

I'd recommend getting a bench from somewhere else. I don't like the fatass bicycle seat lol. I find it counter-productive

                My Advice: Don't

Get a gym membership. Working out at home sounds like a good idea, but its your home, a place to relax, work, whatever, so when you're there you tend to be in the mood for those things.

Going to gym, there is nothing to do except exercise and look at ass if you want. So you will have much more productive workouts and be in the correct mindset and not so lazy.

i bought the cheapest weights i could find, a couple cheapy dumb bell bars and a barbell bar. i go to walmart and buy weight plates as my needs increase. some are concrete filled and others are steel, whoopie. i use my home theater speakers for a squat rack. got a removable pull up bar contraption to go in a door way and some ab straps for it, chins and leg raises. i have a not so wide ottoman i do bench presses on.

I don't think it's so much a question of what is better, a home gym or a real gym. It's a question of what is good for a home workout, because in a lot of cases going to the gym is a pain in the ass. It just happens that at the moment I'm right next door to one, so it's not a big deal to pop over a few times a week in the mornings when it's dead.

Walking on treadmill, add incline when your motivated. Past the time watching a movie or reading.

Dumbells and a adjustable bench. This way you can hit almost every upper body part and get the best results.

Getting a home gym was the best idea I ever had. Its a great time saver. Going to a gym means you pretty much lose a half day, all the planning, preparing stuff, driving there and back, etc...At home I can work out whenever I want and I only lose 60-90 minutes in total and can get back to whatever I was doing before.

I had one when I bought my house, sold it on cl for a few bucks... then I joined a gym, I just cancelled it. The home gym and regular gyms aren't me... I'd rather bike or walk my dog.

If you're looking for a GREAT home gym then look no further than Powertec. This is a leverage gym with the "feel" of free weights! You don't need a spotter (unless you're doing skull crushers with obscene weight) and the movements are the same as if you were doing free weights.

With regards to some people saying working out at home is counter productive, I can't agree less, but I guess each person will have their own opinion on this. I feel I take more to the gym at home than I did when I use to go out to the gym.

Here is my setup. Keep in mind that this is last years model (WBLS09)
