The 2012 Presidential Election

If Obama does not allow the tax cuts for the rich to expire (people who make more than $250k p/year) then he will not get re-elected in 2012. It is that basic.

In fact, if he does not kill the tax cuts for the rich, he should not even run again in 2012, and that's coming from a huge early supporter.

I don't know that tax cuts one way or another will hurt or help him two years from now. To me it is pretty simple. If 2012 comes along and the economy is doing well he will most likely be reelected. If the economy is still not doing well he will be in major trouble so long as there is a republican who can come off as intelligent and who has some reasonable ideas about fixing the economy.

This is assuming he would run as an independent. If he runs at all there is a 99% chance he would run as a republican so in the event he was facing Obama he would be the only republican on the ticket.

But Paul can't win the primary so he really isn't a threat to most people.

So his continuing to be in Afghanistan (stepping up combat there even) and Iraq is nothing, but keeping the current tax rates the same and OMFG.

Thing is, the GOP controlled house will have no interest in working with him for precisely those reasons.

We're looking at two years of do nothing gridlocked government.

The only uncertainty is which party the voters will blame for such in 2012.

First off it was one of his main campaigning points, and secondly, it is an unfunded tax break for the very people who deserve it the least.

It would be another slap in the face for his base, and he would appear totally spineless. If he extends the tax breaks for the top 2% he will ultimately lose all support for a second term, guaranteed.

There is a significant difference between those who deserve it and those who need it.
Why is it that success is so looked down on here? And why is it that those who are successful should have to pick up the tab for those who aren't?

Finally if you are a man of your convictions why don't you just give your paysite to someone here that is more needy than you and join the peace corp.

A lot of people on this board are very upset about the idea that the Bush tax cuts for the rich are about to expire, as if they have a vested interest in this.

I am sure the number of people on this board who make more than $250k p/year can be counted on one hand, so it makes no sense whatsoever.

It reminds me of the folks living in trailer parks with Bush/Cheney bumper stickers, like that administration ever gave a flying fuck about them.

This board is filled with fake players galore!

Besides, if the tax breaks for the rich expire, they will still get a tax break for all money earned UP TO $250k, so the reduced tax break scenario would still apply to EVERYONE, including the rich (up to $250K).

Those who bitch about fiscal responsibility and unpaid debt on one hand, and are FOR the UNFUNDED tax breaks on the other hand, are just totally unabashed hypocrites.

Remember, these tax breaks have been in place for years now, and the economy is in the toilet, so to say they are good for the economy and job gains, is patently absurd!

How many jobs were gained over the 8 Bush years again? A big fucking ZERO!

You make a valid point, but lets think for a second. Just because someone has become successful and makes more money then 90% of Americans they should cover the tax bill? Don't get me wrong I think what I am getting taxed at my income is a joke but does not mean I want someone richer to pay it for me.

How long has the US used a tax system that increased the % paid with the more you made? This goes for everyone, as was stated above the cuts for under 250k would be for everyone including the rich. This is simply rolling back a boneheaded break Bush pushed through for his buds, nothing unusual about it and would just take us back to pre Bush stupidity in terms of taxes. Actually, that's a lie because they would still be lower.

It resets to the same as it was during Clinton's term, which is an increase of only around 4% from where it is today. Also, it applies to the top 2%, of which nearly none of, reside here at GFY.

To your point, it does not effect those who make more than 90% of Americans - it applies to those who make more than 98% of Americans! People who will be rich either way.

The economic divide in this country is wildly disproportionate now, and the middle class is getting squeezed out.

You sound like you are campaigning. But the questions remain.
There are a number of people on this board that make far more than 250k annually that are already doing more than their fair share. What is it that makes you feel that this group of people are obligated to do more?

If the voters feel that the GOP works toward the goals they put in motion in their campaign and Barry blocks them, that will work against the Barry, but if they concede and just block the Barry, then Barry will come out on top

The US is much like here in Aus, where the poor or average wage earners pay virtually no tax, and those who achieve and work hard to make a good income are expected to pick up the tab. I know the lower half has a sense of entitlement, but you already get a bloody good deal on the back of the top half.... don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg. You tax the rich too much and they up and leave.

Cool story bro..

So 1% of the population not getting tax cuts will cost him what? It's not like the rich fucks are voting democrat anyway..

All he has to do is cancel the bush tax cuts and give tax cuts to the middle class, whoever thinks tax cuts to the rich will somehow mean they'll employ more people is stupid as fuck, if anything they'll lay off more people as a result because their profits are up..

If they have to pay more tax they'll be more likely to invest in their business for tax write offs.

Fuck you people are dumb..

If the country you live in has given you the ability to become very wealthy, then you should pay it back for the favor, and not run offshore accounts, hide your money, and cry about how horrible it is to lose pennies for the betterment of others - or in this case, the reduction of debt, that so many of you people cry crocodile tears over, because it will effect your "grandchildren".

The government funds too many things for sure, but they also funded the space program, the roads you drive on, the internet, and so much more.

People who think "I got mine, so fuck the rest of you" should just go to hell, where they truly belong.

Actually, you are fucking dumb. I don't like talking politics here as much as I like jabbing with Republicans because nothing you say will ever change anyones mind.

But since you asked so many times, the reason we have a progressive tax system is that you CAN'T fucking tax poor people more. Do you have any God damned idea who those poor people are though? They are the ones that make this economy work. They are the ones washing your car and bagging your groceries. If all of them got rich you would have to work harder than you ever have in your fucking life, they are a necessity.

The reason a progressive tax system is fair is because the only way you got rich is for living in the USA that has an economy based on a progressive tax system. You make more money in the system, you pay more in taxes. It is absolutely fair to ask the person making $1,000,000 per year to pay a higher clip than the person making $25,000 wiping your grandmas ass because you stuffed her in a nursing home. What wouldn't be fair is you using those resources, that labor and this system to get rich without giving a larger chunk back to benefit society as a whole.

And it is an entirely separate point but rich people don't pay anywhere near the fucking tax listed on paper. There are so many fucking loopholes that they usually end up paying far fucking less than even the lower end of the middle class.

So fuck you. I have been in the highest bracket and I'm not too far out of it now. I have always and will always find it fair to contribute back to the system that allows me to make such easy money and live such a good life. Only a selfish fucking asshole would think otherwise.

Australia is America's bitch bro. If the US didn't run the Japs out of your underdeveloped country in WWII you would be speaking Japanese right now.

If we were not protecting you against your Islamic neighbors because you can't do it yourself, then maybe you could stand on your high horse.

Your country has the same land mass as the US, but thanks to your country's absurd and shortsighted isolationistic rules against immigration, your country does not even have a large enough population to share the taxes your government is in dire need of! This means you can't afford almost anything, from a proper military, to almost any improved infastructure.

I have family there, and I have visited as well, so I am not talking out of my ass.

The tax cuts on the rich will not be the issue. For the tax cuts on the poor and middle class to pass they will be bundled in with extending the tax cuts on the rich. If he wants a chance to win in 2012 he will work on cutting the deficit and expanding tax cuts across the board.

We don't have the resources for this huge population you speak of. Most of Australia is desert, and pretty much usless. The US is a very rich country with fertile lands, loads of water, and it can sustain the large population. Aus is just a giant desert with a few slivers of green around the edges.

The US national debt is fast approaching $14 TRILLION DOLLARS!

http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Tax breaks or increases will not fix this.

A radical change in the way this country is run is in order, or the US will be a third world country in no time.

A new energy economy, and a better education system would be a good start.

You make some good points there, no doubt.

The government funds too many things for sure, but they also funded the space program, the roads you drive on, the internet, and so much more.

People who think "I got mine, so fuck the rest of you" should just go to hell, where they truly belong.
Travel through anywhere USA and visit the industrial parks and manufacturing plants. Certainly there are a few owners that do play the offshore game. But many many more don't. They employ people and provide insurances for those people. And if you actually do look at the core of the country you will see a group of people who don't cry around about what someone else owes them. They don't spend their lives making bad decisions.

The entitlement mentality is a cancer that needs to be eradicated. If you think the upper 1% is the problem, then you are destined to never be a part of it.

It does make sense to put a higher tax on richer people.

Good fucking grief. RICH PEOPLE DO NOT PAY TAXES!, you fucking morons. "Tax cuts for the rich" is a fucking slogan thought up by the democrats. None of these fucking guys, regardless of party, pay taxes... ask John Kerry.

They should cut taxes to 15% for people making over 50K/year. Everyone pays their share, John Kerry, George Bush, Bill Gates and BFT3K.

This is just another ploy to pull more shit on the sheep. Is your team really winning?

I love how people argue against tax cuts... what there should be is MORE tax cuts, across the fucking board and a smaller government that's not spending out of control with no fucking accountability for its actions or for the future spending it's setting up in advance... let alone being held to the restrictions specifically placed on the federal government as to what it can and can't regulate / control... but that's a whole 'nother debate...
