anyone here have expereince with trains???

booked a trip from los angeles to houston. have a private room with bath, meals included... no wifi on trains as of this time though. be a 2 day trip.

figure to take a few books and the laptop... my daughter and grandson have the next room... figure it will be a good way to spend some time with the family.

Ha that was exactly what first came to my mind too.

I travel a lot by train in various countries but never more than a day's worth of travel. One of my life travel goals is to do the train up the West coast from San Diego all the way to Vancouver (which isn't that far off the journey they made on Big Bang actually). I would say to make sure you bring a laptop or portable dvd player and give yourself some stuff to watch when the family novelty wears off a bit.

Been on a few trains, but only in Europe.

Only memorable time was when there was no seats left, so I ended up sitting on the floor in the entrance part, where there's no door and you watch the fields whizz by you. A few people were there with me also.

Got shaken down for a couple hundred. They basically said either give us some money, or we'll throw you out the entrance that's one foot away for us. Fucken Eastern Europeans...

Why on earth would you voluntarily spend 2 days in a can in order to spend time with your family? LOL. There has to be a better way.

4x's as much... round trip air tickes are $510 each in coach, the train is more like 4K

For a lot of the same reasons that some people love to go on long car trips or even cruises. Sometimes the journey is part of the vacation.

I am... 'family novelty' isn't something that's part of me... the train from SD to Vancouver does not go through parts of the bay area .. need to take a bus for a small part of the ride...

Yeah...that has been the fly in the ointment but luckily, my best friend lives in the Oakland area. So, I would probably do SD to Oakland and then take a couple days break and then continue the rest of the way. I am probably over that way again in April/May so thinking about maybe doing it then. I'd be on my own until I got to the cities where friends are but still it is something I have always wanted to do.
