    a marketing idea I had today.

    Offer a gamble option.



    The person would go on your site and if they went to sign up, then changed there mind, a pop up box would offer them money.



    It would work this way, they would have to sign up for a newsletter and then they would get the chance to win a prise (and it would be guranteed).



    The bulk of the prises would be $1 to $20 (for instance) which is a token that can be used to pay towards membership for the first month. Ie, if they win $2 then they get $2 of the membership.



    You could also offer other prises, say cd's, dvd's, free membership.



    Not sure if it would convert better, but I think many may sign up for a free newsletter just for the heck of it to see what they may win. At least you can then send them a regular newsletter.

              Your idea is called a "lottery" and you would have the Lottery Police and Gaming Authorities all over your ass in about three seconds for operating a lottery without a license. Other than that, not too bad. You are on the right track though, so keep trying!

                      Forget about marketing tricks and gimmicks. Why don't you make a really great site that the visitor would love to become a member?
