Advantages & Disadvantages Of VPS Cloud Hosting

I am especially concerned about data safety... how the things look like with security when using cloud storage with VPS?

So as you know a VPS Cloud setup is Basically A couple of large Fibre Channel / I-scsi Raid array setups with a bunch of Powerful machines ...

So you have a lot of Drives in a Raid Setup . Your Data lives on the raid setup , this means if one physical machine goes down your service can be easily restarted on one of the backup servers. Since the Data is in the Cloud.

Advantages, is the price.

Disadvantages, if someone in the same machine uses a lot of CPU, you will get affected.

But, I guess that if the monitoring and support is good enough, you should not find this problem, as they will kick the guy or ask him to upgrade to dedicated.

I once had cloud hosting at MediaTemple and it fucking sucked big time!!!!
Constant bullshit, mysql downtimes, files are spread among couple of servers, if one of them fails (and they were failing way too often) some parts of your site are not working ....

VPS on single server or just single server(s) is way to go

This is not true. You will never feel it. When you setup a virtual machine you put the resources that you want the server to have. It doesn't tough other peoples resources. This is virtualization 101

There are many advantages.

You are typically on a higher end server.. (even though you are not the only one it is a much better server then most normal dedicated servers out there)

You are on shared storage. (SAN). This provides you with a ton of data security. Your data is on a private network instead of being directly on the server. The storage will have RAID if one of the hard drives go bad, you will never notice it, If the entire shelf goes down, it usually has redundant features such as multiple controllers, and multiple disk array shelves, so even if one disk shelf or controller goes out. You will not feel it, and your data will still be there.

If a cloud host is using a software such as VMware or Citrix or Microsoft as there cloud virtualization software. It has a lot of great features to basically provide 100% uptime. It also balances out resources. If you are on a farm of 10 physical servers with 100 virtual servers, it will load balance the servers depending on server resources to make sure there is no hardware that is overloaded. If the physical server you are on, it will automaticaly migrate your virtual server to another physical server to keep it running. usually in less time then a reboot.

Some of the Cons are this.

If you run a big enough server farm. It will cost you more in the long run to be on a cloud

Some else has access to your information. If there is a rogue employee or a creep working there, many people have access to your info.. I do cloud consulting for a lot of financial firms and this is usually will have them spend the money to build there own in-house cloud then give it to someone else. Especially for compliance reasons.

What do you mean by that? Is it different than with managed dedicated? Who else has my info except the hosting provider technicians? And by the info do you mean my personal information or file data on the storage?

Security is my main concern, well, I have always been a bit paranoid about my data safety.

I mean people who work for the company where you are hosting. It is a bigger deal to some then others as I mentioned. If a hosting technician gets fired and goes haywire. They might harm your data, not because of you, just because they want to harm the company, or people like that creep over at google who got fired because some kid he met at a tech convention wouldnt tell him about his girilfriend. So he went into the kids email account and read all his email and listened to his google voice notes. Found out who his girlfriend was and started harrassing her.

Most of the time things like this are a long shot. But you asked the pros and cons. And typically when i talk to people about cloud solutions. This is the #1 reason why they do not go with it. I work with corporate customers though who have either legal documents or financial information.

You have to remember. A Cloud service like rackspace or amazon has tons of employees with access to your data. Most corporate customers host there servers in there own office, with a 10Mbit line or 100Mbit so on so forth. This is highly available in NY. They are typically hosting accounting programs, databases. so on so forth. They do not use outside hosts. In the case of hosting websites only. This is not very cost effective.

No, Not personal data, the file data.

Also most hosting in the Cloud typically is UnManaged. They just give you a login and password. It is basically a normal dedicated server. You will not notice the difference.
