If someone is lazy, getting a job is the only thing they will be able to do. You can't work for yourself and be lazy. Unless you are very lucky and stumble across a very easy way to make money and it last a while, if you are lazy and work for yourself you wont be working for yourself for long.

Lazy people lack discipline, they need structure and to be told what to do (ie a boss).

if someone is lazy, they will wind up getting a JOB and riding the clock and doing just enough to get a paycheck without getting fired. Where as if thy are working for themselves and lazy, they are cheating themselves not the company they work for and enventually they will go out of business.

Makes perfect sense to me. The guy sounds lazy and unmotivated, therefore he may not *want* to get a job but it is the only option ultimately for lazy, undisciplined people.

your odds go up if you working less than 40 hours a week, sleep late each day, and spend a lot of time at the beach.... but yeah it could happen to any of us regardless, but some are more likely to go down faster/first than others.

The person who made that thread on AskDamageX was me. About the sleeping in thing, sleeping in doesn't mean that I don't work 12+ hrs a day. My job wasn't time-sensitive so there were times I slept during the day and stayed up all night.

I wasn't lazy working for myself, there were many days I worked more than twelve hours, but it's a huge difference working for myself versus working for another person. I was usually in front of my pc from the time that I woke up till the time I slept. I was still able to sleep in though because I just stayed home all day and had no other obligations/social life. I would eat all my meals in front of my pc and I always home working, so sleeping in definitely had no affect on my work.

I enjoyed working for myself and I WASN'T tired after pulling in long hours, but working for someone else is extremely tiring. Probably because I have less freedom and because I hate being surrounded by co-workers. I sit in a cubicle and there are people all around me, some that I don't get along with. It is the combination of working to make someone else rich, the lack of control and being around "people" that is making working 40 hrs a week excruciatingly long. Dealing with people makes me tired and rises my stress-level. Especially people that I strongly dislike. I can easily work 60 hrs a week from home for myself and still have energy to spare. I am not a lazy person. It would not have been possible for me to stay self-employed for 7 years if I was lazy.

I always got my sleep in but I made sure that I was on the pc from the moment I woke up till the time I went to bed. I was never a sociable person so instead of doing things that others would do such as go out etc, I would use that time to sleep. That doesn't mean I wasn't working 10+ hrs a day.

And the thing about going to the beach, yes I would do that but then work at night and sleep at 3 am.

Maybe I would if there was someone eligible, it would make the day go by faster but there really isn't. Work is just work.

That's not really true actually. I used to work extremely hard. As I said earlier, I was on the pc from the time I woke up till the time I slept. Not all of it work to be sure but I worked HARD. It took me a long time to even figure out how to make money and I never gave up and I had a lot of perseverance and a lot of heart.

My only guilty pleasure was sleeping in. So what if I slept 9-10 hrs a day? I still busted my ass working from the time I woke up till the time I slept. All I did was sleep and work, I barely even left my house to be honest.

I didn't get my shit together in time because I mainly submitted galleries and we all know how that's doing. I started doing blogs too, trying to build up a big network but by that time my finances were in serious trouble so I had to get a job. I had to get a job in order to keep a roof over my head and in order to eat since there was no money left. Plus back taxes too.

I didn't spend all my time goofing off at the beach, jeez. There were a few days during the summer that I went to the beach and it was nice and that's all I was referring to. Doesn't mean I didn't go home and work all night...

I doubt you were putting 12+ hours of work a day in the last few months. It would be next to impossible to only make $3k a month working that much.

I remember coming home from a 6-6 12 hour shift and barely having enough energy to work on my sites. Somehow I did it though. I quit my job after I was able to make enough to live on. That was about 10 years ago.

sounds like me totally... my webmaster days were alot more flexible and I worked 2-3x harder, I feel like I live in a trap now.. making someone else more money and no free time to be building and marketing for myself.

There is a huge difference between working 80 hrs a week for yourself and working 40 hours a week in a cubicle making someone else rich. Psychologically it's a huge difference and it's mentally draining (for me at least) to work for someone else. I don't get along with one of my co-workers and it drains me. 40 hours seems like an eternity because I'm constantly miserable at work. If I'm working for myself and I'm making good money then I would truly enjoy it and I would feel passionate about what I'm doing, even if I was working 80 hrs a week and that's the truth. How am I supposed to feel energized about working 40 hrs a week for someone else plus the commute too? It's mainly dealing with people and having to interact with them that is draining the life out of me, I simply do not like it at all.

I have to admit that I am thankful for having found a job even though I complain so much. The recession is tough and it wasn't east finding that job and I am glad I have it (even though I complain). I know that if I didn't have that job things would be much worse. So I'm glad they gave me a chance.

During the last few months I got depressed because income was getting worse and to be honest, during the last few months I was looking for a job. I should have quit gallery submitting and started making hundreds of blogs etc. I did work during the last few months but getting sign ups became the equivalent of finding a needle in a hay stack or pulling teeth...

Yes, this was me also 10 years ago, when I first started. Back then I worked 7-4:30pm at a f/t job and then would come home and stay up until midnight or even later trying to figure out how to make money online and submitting freesites. I was in my 20's back then. Now I'm in my 30's and I feel physically weaker; I'm more tired. And in a way I feel like life just sucked out the spirit or energy out of me (that I had back then). I just don't have that enthusiasm anymore and I don't know if I ever will have it again.

I work at a landrover/jaguar dealership.. E-marketing manager.. selling cars online, seo for our sites, adding cars online, writing descriptions, dealing with customers, building traffic. etc etc.. all new stuff to our dealership which I am doing an awesome job at, but if I was doing this for myself I'd be making 10x more.

join a gym. you're stressing yourself with these thoughts and it does you no good. physical activity is great stress reliever.

Are you serious? I am also doing something VERY similar but I don't really want to write about it on the boards. VERY similar.... lol Except for a big agency and it's not one dealership but many. I am doing an awesome job too, or so they tell me. We do a lot of directory submissions and google/bing/yahoo directories and article writing etc. A lot of linkbuilding, and it comes very naturally to me.

So how are your sales Slick? By how much have they decreased?

This is actually good advice and I have thought about jogging after work, to relieve stress and tension and to increase my endorphins and make me feel a little better. Increase my energy levels too so I can work on damn sites again.

I knew a guy (friend of a friend) in a similar situation. Went from managing an investment fund worth mid 8 figures to working a day job for $60k a year and facing impending bankruptcy. 3 weeks ago he jumped off the balcony of his high rise condo 27 floors up. Crazy times.
