Bill Clinton lost top secret nuclear launch codes for MONTHS

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...es-MONTHS.html

As commander of a country with nearly 10,000 nuclear warheads, making sure you don't lose the launch codes for the apocalyptic arsenal would probably be high on your priority list.
But a new book by a U.S. General reveals that former president Bill Clinton did just that, and did not realise they were missing for several months.
The president had aides turning the White House upside down to recover the codes, but it is unclear if they were ever found.

General Hugh Shelton, who served under Clinton as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed the amazing gaffe in his memoir 'Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior'.

If the president wanted to launch a nuclear attack, he must input the codes before warheads can be armed.
But Mr Clinton, who served two terms between 1993 and 2001, managed to misplace it in 1998 and only realised it had been missing months later
General Shelton writes: 'At one point during the Clinton administration the codes were actually missing for months.
'That's a big deal - a gargantuan deal.'
Another military man gave a similar account in another book seven years ago.

Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert Patterson said that on the morning after the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal broke, he made a routine request of the president to present him with the card so he could swap it for an updated version.

He said: 'He thought he just placed them upstairs. We called upstairs, we started a search around the White House for the codes, and he finally confessed that he in fact misplaced them.
'He couldn't recall when he had last seen them.'
The biscuit was then replaced.

Lt Col Patterson was one of the people charged with carrying around the 'football' - a mobile computer terminal the president could use to launch a nuclear attack wherever they were.

Mr Clinton was no stranger to scandal during his time in office.
He infamously became only the second president to be impeached, after Andrew Johnson, over his affair with White House intern Monika Lewinsky.
He was also embroiled in controversy after sacking seven employees from the White House travel office in 1993, as well as allegations of sexual harassment against Paula Jones while governor of Arkansas.
And it is not the first time a U.S. president has lost the codes.

Jimmy Carter managed to leave them in the pocket of a suit that was then sent to the dry cleaner.

NOT!

It is not the President that carries around the launch codes ... it's a military aide whose SOLE job is to protect those codes.

It's not like they sit on his desk in a folder. They are contained in a sealed briefcase.

Exactly.

This "briefcase" is commonly called "the football". I don't believe the President carries any codes; He just gives the order.

Are you guys sure?

I think you are talking about two separate things. I'm pretty sure the President has a little credit card sized item with security codes.

That may be for something else and not the football, but I was under the thought that they went together.

The codes are not with the briefcase they are with the President. The President needs the codes to activate the device inside the briefcase !

I think that is some kind of tracking device and possibly a way to summons the secret service (like if he is in his private quarters -- Dan Quale had a funny sex with his wife story involving a nicknack that if knocked over would summons them and they knocked it over).

Or maybe there is also a card that has to go into the machine contained in the football.

We'll never know.

But what is described in that story does not sound possible.

There are four things in the Football. The Black Book containing the retaliatory options, a book listing classified site locations, a manila folder with eight or ten pages stapled together giving a description of procedures for the Emergency Broadcast System, and a three-by-five inch card with authentication codes. The Black Book was about 9 by 12 inches and had 75 loose-leaf pages printed in black and red. On the 'vital' page listing possible responses to a nuclear attack, retaliatory options appear in red and were labeled: 'Rare, Medium or Well Done.' The book with classified site locations was about the same size as the Black Book, and was black. It contained information on sites around the country where the president could be taken in an emergency.

Not only that, I cannot imagine that this guy would be allowed to write that if true. The government screens all books like this and could easily declare such a mishap as a classified secret.

Or maybe not. Maybe it did happen and it's been long enough that they do not think it's a big deal anymore.

It just sounds like something that should be impossible considering there is a high level guy assigned full-time to take care of this stuff.

JOHN DONVAN: Things that a President can lose: some key votes in Congress, his standing in the polls, a game of golf. Things that a President can never lose, never, ever: the card with the nuclear codes on it. The one that lets him get into that black briefcase that an aide always brings along, inside which are instructions for launching a nuclear attack. Like the briefcase, which is called the football, that card, which is called the biscuit, is supposed to be with the President at all times, giving him numbers to read out loud that identify him to everyone in the system as the commander in chief. That's why you don't lose the biscuit. Think of it like an ATM pin number to get your money, except that when Bill Clinton was President, someone lost the biscuit. This is according to the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Hugh Shelton, who’s just come out with a memoir, and it’s right there on page 392.

He also killed 100,000 Iraqi children and babies, but no one cares, he was the best president ever!
