Wow what a coincidence, I just got done watching that movie and it put a REALLY bad taste in my mouth. Was absolutely disgusted by a couple of scenes in it, wish I could un-see it as well.

Let me guess, she gets brutally beaten and raped? Cause, you know, it's not entertainment these days without at least one brutal beating and rape scene so graphic and repulsive it makes you never want to have sex again.
This is the reason I am boycotting all horror movies at the moment, but unfortunately, it's spreading into other genres as well.
I know it's fake, but as you said, you can't "unsee" things.

Dude, she gets beaten to a fucking pulp. I'm with you on this shit man. It happens to women IRL, it doesn't need to extend to film for portrayal and glorifying the violence.

Thank you, I will not be watching that, but glad you agree. I expected that I might take some shit for posting what I did but knowing there's at least one person here on the same page makes me feel a lot better.

If watched in the context of the film, its not glorifying anything. That scene is to show the nature of the main character. The book describes the beating in painful detail, so the movie wouldn't do the source material justice if it was just watered down.
You're not supposed to like the guy giving the beating. The scene is necessary. It's easy to say it's gratuitous when just watching it on YouTube, but when watched with the pacing of the movie, you get the punch in the gut the writer was trying to get across.

Just watched that clip. What she says to him during makes me want to see the film in its entirety, instead of seeing the clip out of context. Something's up with that scene.
I found this also, where Alba and Casey Affleck defend the violence in the film, saying it's not glorified; it's supposed to be revolting and disturbing. I liked how Affleck says what he objects to is movies where "robots or aliens or soldiers go through and kill 400 people and no one really feels anything." Valid point...
I never said it was. I said that I boycott horror films and that the brutal rape BS is seeping into other genres as well, like this one.
To me it doesn't really matter if the scene is "necessary." It still reads like sexualization and glorification of violence, and that's not something I want to see. It's also not just my perception. Many others see it that way too if you take a look at the reviews for this film.
I wouldn't try to stop people from watching this kind of thing but it's not healthy for me.

I'll admit 'glorifying' is a strong word and this movie technically isn't doing such, but it is in a widely distributed film for profit.
Fact is this is not the only brutal scene in this movie. It focuses on the actual violence against women quite heavily. They do not need to enact in full a simulated beating of a woman. No film should do this.
Its just my personal opinion that I feel quite strongly about that such depictions shouldn't be allowed on film. I know others feel differently but hey, that's what makes us all individual.

Sounds like the purpose of it being in there IS to get people feeling disgusted. Fact is a lot of women get the shit kicked out of them in real life, not all of them "deserve it" as some here will no doubt say in order to show how badass they are. It very much is disgusting and maybe people in general need to see it even if it's just acted out in order to wake the hell up to what's going on out there.
Why just the other night I was watching TV and saw this commercial about some teenagers playing 2 on 2 hoops, then they went driving and weren't paying attention or something and WHAMMO.... car totalled, looked like only 1 survivor - the girl driver who was screaming the names of her friends. Pretty shocking and horrific yes? It was put out by the government as a warning against speeding, or texting while driving, or the like. Again, very in-your-face shocking, yet all acted out and not actually real. But it seems someone out there feels it's "necessary" for people to see it.
I think I will end up watching this movie, at the very least whenever it happens to make it's way onto Movie Central.

I disagree. I think films like this that are very real, brutal and disturbing hit home, and can make people more aware of things like violence against women. You hear reports of violence on the news, even locally, and it doesn't phase most people, unless it's someone they know. It takes things like this, that shake people to the core, to open their eyes to the despicable things that do go on in the world and need to be prevented. If it wasn't played out in so much detail, it wouldn't resonate with people the way it should. Most would just disregard it.
I understand the point some of you are making as far as exposing violence for what it is, but it's extremely disturbing to me when a significant number of people, people right here on GFY, aren't watching and going "Oh my god how terrible" but instead "Oh my god, that was so hot watching Jessica Alba get spanked!"
Like I said, if you see the entire movie, you'll understand why the scene is there -- and especially if you read the book. The story is about a psychopath living behind the facade of a seemingly righteous person. When that beating comes, its all about illustrating the character of this monster. There would be no impact if it was just alluded to with crafty editing. It needs to be there in all of its ugliness.
I never understood why someone would want to be scared. I think it's a phenomenon brought on by people never being really actually scared like back in the day wolves would hunt you down just randomly and things like that don't happen anymore.
Yeah I was quite surprised during some of the scenes in that movie, had no idea it would be that way. Good flick though imo.
