Why is John Lennon such an Icon?

I love music and musical history , but as much as I have listened to the Beetles and John Lennon specifically, and as much as I have read about him, I can't figure out why he has been so influential. Is it mainly because he was killed in his solo career prime?

So you Lennon aficionados please help me understand.

the little round wire framed glasses.

and he was a Beatle, Paul was too cute and cuddly to be cool, and John fell under the influence of an older talentless creepy gook lady and that added to his cool mystique, plus he was a neurotic mess, which fits the image people want to have in their genius idols.

and of course because he was gunned down by a psycho in Manhattan and died young.

dying young does have its advantages.

My understanding is that it's about the voice they sing it with. So, they can give written lyrics to 1,000 people, but only 1 person will sing it well. Therefore, it is about the pitch of the voice and pleasant melody of the voice. A singer's talent pleases the ear. John Lennon sings about the good and peaceful, doesn't he. Talented voices can be so good, that they even sing about the evil and people still like it. In other words, a person can sing "slit my wrists, cut off my arms," and the listener still likes it, because the voice sounds sweet and melodic.

Same type of thing as Bob Marley. People loved him for his vision of the world. That, and he ended up being a martyr for that vision.

The dude was a true artist. If you can't get into his music, it's up to you. But he spoke to and for many people in the 60's and 70's. In 100 years people will still know the name John Lennon... you cant say that for very many people alive in the last 50 years.

Lennon was the original founder of the Beatles. The Beatles transformed the music industry and what we listen to today. Lennon was the one who was not afraid to push his views thru the music and thus music was changed from cute melodies to something with meaning. And he did fuck up with Yoko. She was his downfall.

I've never been a huge fan of the Beatles, but clearly their music changed the world in huge ways. No group has been more influential to the music industry. They have an amazing history, four kids who made it big, and couldn't handle what happened to them.

But I'm sorry. Take away the whole of the group and John Lennon just doesn't stand up. Take Bono out of U2 and you have, well, nothing. U2 is fucking awesome, and wouldn't be U2 without Bono. Same thing with Journey - Steve Perry without Journey behind him makes him horrible.

John Lennon had a handful of hits after the Beatles. He was also the cause of the Beatles breaking up. He might have been talented, but he also destroyed the greatest band in the world.

And at the same time you have Paul Mccartney who is the most successful songwriter in the history in the world.

Because he was one of the most influential song writers of the 20th century. Because he had the guts to stand up for what he believed in. And yes because he was killed before his time.

That is way a way over simplification of the story. After the death of Brian Epstein, the band lost their focused leader who was really the glue. During the recording of "Let it Be" Harrison was so pissed at Lennon and McCartney that he left and had to be cajolled into coming back after a week or so. I believe that had Epstein lived they may have lasted a few more years but ater the run they had it was only a matter of time before they said Fuck it.

Lennon was the one who was not afraid to push his views thru the music and thus music was changed from cute melodies to something with meaning. And he did fuck up with Yoko. She was his downfall.
Yoko was his downfall? Downfall from what? If anything that legless cunt McCartney married was Pauls downfall.

We don't have "voices of a generation" anymore these days, sadly, so "kids" (anyone under, say, 35-40) today don't know the power that music has to change lives, influence hearts and minds, and basically change the world. The Beatles did this, as did Bob Dylan and a handful of others. But with John Lennon it was his achingly beautiful, intimate honesty, and willingness to explore difficult emotional subject matter, that set him apart. Plus, you must remember that, during his lifetime, very few musicians before Lennon combined intelligent lyrics, emotional honesty and infectious melodies with a haunting voice.

Yes, add the tragedy of his murder, yes add the immense popularity of The Beatles...but for most Lennon fans it was his uncanny insight into humanity, how he somehow - somehow - managed to communicate exactly the unspoken feelings and attitudes of millions of people who couldn't express those feelings (or even identify them) themselves.

Again, Voice of a Generation for a disparate Generation (Baby Boomers) unable to agree on anything except Lennon's Genius.

Plus, he was cool. You have ears, his music doesn't move you? Make you think? Make you FEEL....something? If not then I really can't help you out here.
