U.S. issues European travel alert

The U.S. State Department has issued an alert for Americans travelling in Europe, warning them there is a greater potential that al-Qaeda may launch attacks against U.S. citizens and Europeans.

Authorities are concerned that militants may be planning co-ordinated attacks similar to the Mumbai shooting rampage in 2008.

The alert does not focus on any particular areas of Europe but urges U.S. citizens to be extra vigilant when they're in public places such as tourist spots and transportation hubs.

Well...in my case...I do not travel internationally anymore...and I do not fly domestically anymore...and a small part of the reason is because of the additional bullshit that one has to go through...to do both...but the freedom to travel internationally is still there and the freedom to travel domestically is still there (at least in the U.S.).

Other than the additional hassle in international travel and domestic commercial flight...I for one am not aware of any loss of freedom since 9/11. I do the very same things that I did prior to 9/11.

I recall going into an airport without feeling like a suspect.
I remember being able to have a few drinks with friends and not fear driving home.
I recall when the government listening to my communications required a warrant.
I recall when immigration and customs did not interrogate me each time I entered the country.
I recall being able to move money internationally without the IRS wanting notice.
I recall driving with out surveillance cameras on many roads.
I recall not being a criminal for hiring an undocumented person, never needed to check documents.
I recall when government, especially the federal government was not prying into my life, keeping files and records.

I recall life before the two recent futile wars, the war on drugs, and the war against terror. Both of these provide government with unlimited justification to stick their noses into everyones life.

The hassle of flying commercially has been increased but one still has the freedom to fly commercially.

I remember being able to have a few drinks with friends and not fear driving home.

Drinking and driving penalties have been increased in my lifetime...as they should have ...in my opinion.

I recall when the government listening to my communications required a warrant.

To my knowledge it still requires judicial oversight.

I recall when immigration and customs did not interrogate me each time I entered the country.

I have always been "interrogated" when I have entered the country...but there are more questions asked this day and age.

I recall being able to move money internationally without the IRS wanting notice.

As I recall...in my lifetime...there has always been a sum of money that brought notice to the IRS.

I recall driving with out surveillance cameras on many roads.

The number of traffic cameras have increased...but I view this as a good thing.

I recall not being a criminal for hiring an undocumented person, never needed to check documents.

The point is that there is a problem. Government gets blamed for not stopping terror acts or warning people. Government gets blamed for warning people and stopping attacks.
