Because the keyword appears first in the domain?
And subdomains are more difficult to set up than sub-folders.
Two reasons why Google might give them more value.

I have a blog with around 15k / day, SE traffic. Makes me around $150 / month.
And I have smaller blogs, with just 100-200 hits / day that make more..

It's a too-general-keyword failure, so beware

Sorry for the bump, I was wondering, do A-B-C link trades still work with SE's with same domains, or have they caught on to that?

Meaning, if I have some sub-domains, and I do an ABC trade like this..

(A)hotgirl.mydomain.com - A->B
(B)whateverlinktrade.com - B->C
(C)www.mydomain.com

Will google be like.. hey wait a minute, his subdomain is linking to whateverlinktrade.com, so this counts as an A-B trade?

Google treats subdomains as individual domains, while it treats folders on a domain as belonging.
For SEO on a large number of sites this is ideal. If one goes bad you just remove the content, delete the sub and create another with the content rehashed.

It can be good for linking too.

Just for organizational benefits it's a good option.

If the sites were basic HTML pages you could do $3000 on a Hostgator $15 per month shared account, if Wordpress you'd need 2 or 3 of them
