Assign each laptop different IP's

The router gives out an IP to each computer as they connect, sometimes ours gets confused. Setting specific IP's on each computer to connect with stops it.

On ours a computer would join the network, get assigned an IP, then if it shut off and didn't restart for a week or two, another computer in the house would get it's IP, so when it tried to connect, it wouldnt allow it as that IP was already closed.

I'll try that. I had the one that was causing the problem assigned it's own ip but I'll assign all of them their own.

as jdoughs says. the only thing i can think of would be ip collision. Trying usuing DHCP instead of static ips.

Perhaps only 1 laptop can be connected to the network at the same time. Only 1 bird can sit on top of a pole at the same time.

That's likely the problem. If the one you are assigning the static IP is within the DHCP pool then they may conflict. Either 1) Assign it an IP outside the pool 2) Assign all static IPs 3) Allow all computers to get an IP via DHCP.

#1 probably makes the most sense where you need a static IP.

Example if the DHCP pool range is 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.50 then your computer wanting 192.168.1.100 would be okay. But if the computer wants 192.168.1.10 it might potentially conflict and cause this issue.
