The Raider Nation, and the entire NFL, mourn the passing away of 26-year NFL veteran, George Blanda, who died at the age of 83.

Blanda, the quintessential old-school NFL player, played until he was a month shy of his 49th birthday as a kicker. He played quarterback well into his 40s. He won games quarterbacking and kicking on the same day and had a wonderful run in the 1970s for the Raiders.

Blanda, who played a staggering 26 years of professional football, died Monday at age 83. One of the all-time ironmen in the history of sports, he was a close friend of Oakland owner Al Davis, who is two years younger than Blanda.

There will never be a player like Blanda in the NFL again. We?re watching Favre hold on at age 40 now. Add eight more years and that was Blanda.

Blanda, who started playing in the NFL in 1949, joined the Raiders at the age of 38 and was an effective backup quarterback (who came in and saved the Raiders more than once) and kicker.

On ESPN?s SportsCenter on Monday, Mike Ditka remembered his old friend as an all-time competitor who hated losing, even if it was ?pitching pennies.?

My one experience with Blanda certainly backs up that reputation.

In 2000, while I was covering the Minnesota Vikings, I contacted Blanda, who was 73 at the time. Vikings kicker Gary Anderson was just about to pass Blanda as the NFL?s all-time leading scorer. When the record fell, the old record holder is often sought out to bring perspective. Usually, the old record holder is supportive of his record being broken.

Not old George. He wanted nothing to do with it. In fact, he was pretty salty about it. As Ditka said Monday, Blanda was ultra-competitive even well after his retirement. He hated to lose.

Blanda would have nailed that chip-shot field goal to seal the game...

when i was a little kid, the Raiders were my team...i even had a Stabler jersey! Cliff Branch, Belitnekof, Dave Casper, double 0 Jim Otto...plus all the looneys on defense. good times, good times. Stopped following them after they moved to LA and I've been a 49ers fan ever since...

Do you live in the Bay Area?

I go even further back with the Silver and Black, to Daryle "The Mad Bomber" Lamonica times. Yeah, the Raiders have always seemed to have a bunch of wild characters and over-achievers on their team.

BTW, I was sad to hear that Jack "The Assassin" Tatum passed away in July at age 61. I was able to meet and talk with him in the 90's at an autograph signing. He was really soft-spoken and willing to spend time reminiscing with fans, instead of doing the assembly-line impersonal autograph thing so many NFL'ers do.

Same here...I still have an Oakland Raiders trashcan....Except, I'm not a big fan of any team now as I've gotten bored with football.

used to live in the bay area till my parents split...San Rafael, Alameda, Fremont, Oakland, Berkeley, Castro Valley (lol)...we moved around a lot! but all my teams are bay area teams...the A's, 49ers and Warriors...been some lean times lately!

Thats cool you met Jack Tatum. I got Lester Hayes autograph once, it was awesome! I loved the stick um that used to be plastered all over himself by the end of the game! crazy.

Yeah SeaBass should've nailed that kick.. I could tell he was trying to adjust his positioning as he approached the kick and right when I saw that I knew we were in trouble because it was chip shot.. he didn't need to make an adjustment.. and when he did, guess what it went wide left. Couldn't believe it. Teammates say if he did that same shot 100 times, he'd only miss one, that was it.

I grew up in Alameda.. the Oaktown coliseum was sooo close. I may be coming up this sunday, stoked. You ever go to games ADG?
