?In another five years,? Thomas G. Kelley was saying yesterday, ?I doubt this will be an issue. Remember, in 1948, people blasted Harry Truman for integrating the military. They said mixing blacks and whites could never work.

As it turned out, the military was ahead of the rest of society on that issue. On this issue, the military is years behind.?

Kelley, who is secretary of the Massachusetts Department of Veteran?s Services, a naval officer and a Medal of Honor recipient in Vietnam, had followed coverage of testimony on the ?Don?t ask, don?t tell? policy last week before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
?No matter how I look at the issue,? Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the committee, ?I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens. . . . Allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.?

Shortly after Mike Mullen spoke his mind, Kelley sent his friend an e-mail congratulating him for articulating the view Kelley has held for more than 20 years.

?Admiral Mullen was honest enough to say that he?d served with homosexuals since 1968,? Kelley said. ?It was the same for me, when I was commanding a ship more than 25 years ago. There was no secret about who was gay . . . and it didn?t matter. What mattered was that they were good sailors, trustworthy and reliable people you could depend upon.?

Like so many others, Kelley believes the resistance to scuttling ?Don?t ask, don?t tell? falls largely along generational lines. The older the soldier, the harder to let go of outdated stereotypes and caricatures that don?t apply.

?You hear this nonsense about gays threatening unit cohesion,? Kelley said. ?The real threat to that kind of cohesion, that sense of family, is when people are forced to acknowledge a lie. You have to be able to trust the soldier precisely for who he or she may be. That?s the only way cohesion takes place. It?s called integrity.?
Tom Kelley has already made his feelings about ?Don?t ask, don?t tell? known to the members of the congressional delegation, including our new senator, Scott Brown.
After being sworn in Thursday night, Brown was asked about the policy and promptly hedged. He said he needed to ?consult with our generals in the field? first. Translation: I?m waiting to hear from John McCain.

At Tuesday?s hearing, judging by the telltale wisps of smoke that seeped out of both ears, it was clear McCain couldn?t believe what he was hearing. Not long ago, McCain had said the only way he could change his support for the lie better known as ?Don?t ask, don?t tell? was if the military leadership asked that it be changed. That happened Tuesday.

And the seething maverick?s flustered initial response was to suggest Adm. Mullen was speaking only for himself. Nice try, John.

Interestingly enough, it was Papa McCain who hooked Brown up with Steve Schrage, our senator?s new chief of staff. Schrage used to work for Colin Powell, who has reversed his position on ?Don?t ask? ? to mirror Mike Mullen?s.

Does this mean Scott Brown could actually take a step forward, instead of hanging back with those angry old soldiers like the one from Arizona?

Anything?s possible. But I?m guessing the only ?field general? Scott will pay attention to is the one with the silvery strands across his head and the smoke coming out of his ears.
Pastor SpinAlot, you are an ignorant bigot. You certainly don't speak for everyone in the military. As Rochard (former USMC) said above, if you served in the military you undoubtedly came into contact with gay people.

I was in the USN for six years, ending my career as a Petty Officer (equivalent to a Sargent), and I knew and worked alongside gay and lesbian servicepeople, not just sailors, but marines and airforce personnel as well.

Sure, there are a lot of bigots like yourself, and racists as well, still in the military, but your ignorant world view changes nothing.

Before many of our allies allowed gay people to openly serve in the military, the same tired arguments you raise were tossed about. In the end, when change came, there were no major problems or breakdown in morale.

The following countries allow gay people to openly serve in their military:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay.

Whew now that we have the opinion of two black men we now know that ALL "real soldiers" don't want gay men in the military. Speak for yourself. Not others.

Gay men don't spend every waking second trying to find a straight man to have sex with.

I would love to see you go through 1000 men in the military and just by actions tell which ones were gay. You couldn't. You are pitiful.

I was in the Army, it will not work to have another men that like men in the shower with you, like they dont have men and ladies take showers.
Gay men next to straight men sleeping in the same area and showing is a problem in the Army.

So there are no gays in the army now?

Open gays get kick out, like they should be.
If you gay let everyone know and see what happens in the Army, Marines
Lets see where soliders put the M16 at

How can you compare queers and negros?

sperbonzo 09-21-2010 05:22 PM

There is no reason to think that just because someone is gay, they are lusting after you in the shower. I was in the army, and I'm sure that there were some guys in there that were gay, and I couldn't care less. As long as people behave themselves when it comes to respecting others, I have no problem.

For the same reason, I think that it's silly that we segregate men and women in showers and latrines. Just because someone is straight does not mean that they will lust after people of opposite gender in the showers.

I say stop all the segregation. Soldiers are soldiers, straight, gay, men, women, etcs...

While I highly doubt your stats, even if they are correct, what military folks want doesn't matter any more than what Joe Blow wants. They don't dictate policy.

If they did, blacks would have never been allowed in the military.

Thankfully, at that time, our leaders were capable of recognizing discrimination.

Yeah, I'd much rather have a bunch of soldiers that like to rape little girls than a couple gay ones.... ::eye roll::

I don't get it...some of these military types are so gung ho about how brave they are and all the dangers they face and they are afraid of gays?? I'm ashamed of those soldiers....total disgrace to the uniform...."rah rah rah, give me a parade because I'm fighting for your freedom, but gays don't deserve the freedoms I'm fighting for"

So much for being tough guys...

We would be so easy to defeat in war...the enemy wouldn't even need weapons...they could just run at the bigot soldiers totally naked, singing showtunes...victory would be won in about 10 minutes....
