Did you see JUPITER last night?

Some awesome views of Jupiter last night including one of it's moons.

It's still very close to the earth (relatively speaking of course), so check out the sky tonight. I broke out my telescope last night and got a great view.

Yeah, this. Also, is it visible to the naked eye at least as a bright star? Also, what direction in the the evening sky? Best times to view? OMW to Google now lol. Very cool, I love astronomy.

been visible for months now.. brightest thing in the sky next to the moon anyway, can't miss it.

space.com is always very informative, also has space maps so you know what your looking at during the specific time of year.

This is a pic a friend of mine took. I don't have the camera equipment for this, just the telescope. The view I had was exactly what you see here:

You can make out two of Jupiter's moons in this picture.

What is it called when Jupiter hits your eye like a big pizza pie?

Looks cool! I'm going to go for a walk tonight if it's clear and check it out.

Wow who knew that pornpeeps were also Nerds? Like me??

The only time I ever got to look through a real telecope was at the Down Planeteriam here in Montreal about 10 years ago when there was a partial yet big eclipse of the sun. It was amazing.

If I had a telecope I would take it camping and look at the night sky all night long.

Which reminds me: Has anyone here tried taking time-lapse photos of the night sky?

I tried it with a Cannon D80 but all the pictures filled up with noise regardless of my isp or shutter speeds. I wanted to buy a faster lens just for this purpose but I don't know if it would help or not.

Any ideas?

I tried to take some pics last night and my son and I looked at it with his telescope. The pics didn't really show it very well but the moon was awesome here last night. I love Astrology.

gonna check it out tonight. should be neat. Jupiter and all of the planets are on the same elliptic plane. So if you EVER saw Jupiter Mars or Venus in the sky.....you can easily spot Jupiter in most conditions. Even with a big ass moon creating its light

Tough to properly photograph the night sky when you live in the big city.

I'm west of the city and I can take some good photos if my camera is pointed west.
I got some great aurora borealis pics about 5 years ago. Can't find them right now but they came out very nice.

Jupiter should be equally visible for the next couple of nights.

I think on a DSLR you should take photos ever 2-5 minutes and then blend them together to get star trails. Don't go over 30 second exposures. I haven't done it myself but from what I read that's the way to get around the noise that pops up when the sensor is used for long exposures.

I noticed this really bright "star" the other night. I couldn't see any other stars, and I definitely was not looking north. Was that Jupiter?

Around midnight it was fairly high in the sky, south-east.

To the OP - do you have motion tracking on your tele? Cause when ever I try to look at venus mars etc with good magnification, the damn earth spins too fast so you can only see it for like a millisecond before you lose it again.

saw a big white star below the moon last night after dark... knew it had to be jupiter.. just remembered I've got binoculars so that'll have to do tonight. Amazing how close/far that planet is.

Jupiter usually looks pretty damn good through most decent telescopes. Last night at 8pm all 4 moons were out. To the right they were on top of eachother like : and to the left the two other moons.

Saturn was out in the Western sky as well FWIW....in addition, very close to Jupiter was Uranus. I couldnt see it because the moon and a streetlight were fucking me up. All of the kids on the block did get a nice look at Jupiter though, and the moon as well which is always fun to look at.

I wasn't sure if it was Jupiter or not i was looking at in the early hours of this morning.

Seemed brighter than most around it, but still wasn't sure that was actually it...
