Try switching to Miranda - http://www.miranda-im.org/

It's a multi-client messenger application (ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, ....).

Lightweight, fast and portable (copy the directory and run it anywhere from USB key).

I think it's something to do with the new ICQ. I run an old version of ICQ that is very reliable. Tried the new ICQ when I was there and I had that problem almost everyday.
