Dumbass Hosting Question.

OK, if I were to install my own server on a high-speed broadband line on which I would host text-rich only sites, would this work for landing pages? There would of course be links which would in turn be cloaked and referrers hidden so that people could end up where I wanted them to end up.

Would lots of traffic slow this process down so much that it just wouldn't work out?

Thanks in advance.

Sally.

How high speed is your connection? I think the avg home version high speed wouldnt do it if you start pushing serious traffic. Also I dont know if your isp can shut you down for that?

My ISP says I'm fine but I'll have to check into the speed and bandwidth avaiable. I know that the lines I have now exceed Time-Warner's "Business Class" in terms of both bandwidth and speed. This would be for the office setup which I am contemplating. What do you suggest that I obtain in service for my plan?

Thanks.

Sally.

Not sure but I think alot of it depends on the amount of traffic your running. It grows beyond your capacity move to a colo host. Since you know how to run a server you dont need managed then. I figure to run your own server with a good chunk of traffic.I figure oc3 connection at least if its busy.

its a dumb idea in most places to get a connection thats even half decent to host your own sites on it would cost you a min of $150-$300 a month in which case colo would be a better idea.

there are other reasons this is a bad idea im just too lazy to type them all out.

This is true. Plus what happens if you internet goes down. Or your electricity goes out. Are you going to buy a pricey power backup? Also speed to your page would be much slower because it will take an end user more hops to you then it would to a host. Also, what kind of firewall / router do you have?

I can go on for a while. But there are many reasons why this is not a great idea if you plan to have a lot of traffic. It would not be bad to host some sort of personal site. picture sharing for friends and family, so on so forth. But if it is a part of your business you take seriously. There is a reason why everyone does not do this.

The only time I heard someone hosting a server in their home. When we lived in a loft years ago, they had a shared t1 for all the tenants. It slowed to a crawl and when I called, the guy he ran it was pissed. He told me some guy was running server in his loft and I guess was getting slammed with traffic so the network was crawling. He shut him off and I went to comcast.
