GoDaddy.com Up For Auction ? $1 Billion Expected

GoDaddy.com, the website that registers Internet domain names is up for auction and according to the WSJ, it?s believed that the bidding for this web property could go higher then $1 billion US.

Qatalyst Partners has been hired to oversee the sale of Go Daddy Group Inc, a company that currently manages 43 million domain names, making it the largest domain name registrar in the world. Neither GoDaddy.com nor Qatalyst was available for comment on this matter.

He must have had all his money in epass.

I think i'll move the 100 or so left at GD away this evening. Not taking any chances.

there is something odd going on with this transaction..

why would they sell such a profitable company?

i have a feeling that their revenue has taken a big hit this year...

I wonder if Visa is trying to stop there prechecked cross sales. Does anyone know if Moniker would do free transfers the domains I have at godaddy?

In their failed IPO attempt it was revealed that under GAAP they are actually a profitless company.

Yeah, well selling domain names close-to/at-cost to upsell people on products was a great idea and I always questioned how they give good support at the prices they do (even with outsourcing). I can totally see them trying to dump it before bad financials come out but in this economy I would think they would do better, because this is indeed a "cheapest is best" economy?!? I've had a TON of regular hosting clients that have left my hosting for GoDaddy because they are really looking at all their expenses these days... I've had to start matching their rates to keep good clients. Not a problem because I've adjusted my model to accomodate for this. I'd love to really see the numbers behind GoDaddy thought!

GD's scummy deals have been hurting legitimate operators since 2002-2003. Pretty amazing to see the entire webhosting/domain reg business scape reshaped by a blowhard religious zealot that in the end, isn't actually making any money and just wants to walk away.

Kind of like if walmart just said "fuck it" one day and decided to auction themselves off.
