Most depressing song of all time for me is this one because it reminds me of my Dad.

alone again naturally
In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
May as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
(instrumental break)
Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to have cried the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturallyComment

Not feelin' any pain
but i know that it's real
never see the color of the day
in the darkness i kneel
prayin' for sleep
prayin' that it will come easy
but there's something else
i see it miles away
Don't know what time of year it is
i can remember the fall
yet all my strange and simple games
play out on top of a wall
prayin for sleep
prayin' for something so easy
if only the moon
would have left me alone

Don't understand the love for Gary Jules, totally stripped the original of it maniacal paranoia and turned it into a schmaltzy ballad.
With respect to Those Poor Bastards, the whole gothic country genre is hilarious, way too contrived and overwrought; it's only redeeming quality being its campiness. Totally lacking the honesty of let's say Johnny Cash.Comment

The Gary Jules version is a bit more depressing than the Tears for Fears version.Don't understand the love for Gary Jules, totally stripped the original of it maniacal paranoia and turned it into a schmaltzy ballad.

Why do we have to be depressed just because it's 9/11? Yes I mourn the lost, and I have no intentions of being disrespectful, but do you really think all those that died want us sitting here crying like an emo kid?

I have a lot of love for Tom Waits. He has a lot of sad songs (some great choices in this thread), but this one does it for me.
Any song that has the line, "All the good of the world you can fit inside a thimble/and still have room for you and me," you know is going to be bleak
