Report it to their registrar, but I have my doubts they will just let you pick it up. Maybe. Let us know.

Would be interesting to hear what happens. If it's 100% bogus info then the registrar may not be able to warn the owner, unless they look for contact details on the site, or in their CC transaction etc.

No guarantees it would be deleted straight away though, you would still have go through the normal waiting period before having a chance at it. That's assuming the registrar doesn't allow the person to reinstate it for an extortionate fee.

If it's registered at godaddy, they've been known to delete domains with bogus info.

there's an online tool to report bad whois info at http://wdprs.internic.net

but reading some forum threads and websites that go after scammers who use bad whois info - nobody but GoDaddy gives a shit. this domain is registered at Networksolutions.

Nobody gives a shit, only GoDaddy will charge them a penalty fee if it's reported but that's about as far as they go.

QFT,

They don't bother, as long as the owner don't cross any border.

You can still backtrace their emails and report it to the cyberpolice.

I think it's hilarious: folks who registered domains with bogus info, then build zillion dollar brands, but are unable to transfer / sell or protect them in the case of registrar woes, when they ask you to fax over an authorization form with a photocopy of "Fuck You"'s photo ID...

Some big businesses were built upon the shakiest of foundations

I remember people being all vague about whois info when I was brand new, so I used all real info. Know how many calls I've gotten from my who is info that wasn't spam? 1 guy who asked me for advice on his porn domain and told me he got my number from whois.

Thats 1 call in 10 yrs. Using fake info in whois seems overly paranoid.

Nobody gives a shit except MAYBE Godaddy, and they barely give a shit. Even if you got them to delete the domain, it would then enter Pending Delete for 6 days, would hit all the Pending Delete lists everywhere and you'd be in competition with many others to get it.

The worst GoDaddy does is de-activate the domain name and charge you a $199 fee to re-activate it with correct WHOIS info. They certainly will not let the domain name drop instantly, but you cannot renew it either before you have it re-activated.

I've had a domain surrendered to my possession based on the fact they had falsified information in their WHOIS.

There's a process to go through to file a complaint.

Fabulous.com - but you need to get approved for a wholesale account there. They're my favorite registrar by far.

If your just reporting because you want the domain, good luck. Maybe is there was some shady activity (spam, billing scam etc.) reporting it might do something.

unless the domain has your trademark in it why would you care? If the whois wasn't fake, most likely they wouldn't reply anyway...

I think the registrar technically CAN cancel the registration, but I don't know how often this really occurs. You might want to email ICANN and have them clarify the policy in practice.

My guess is it is up to the registrars, and they don't do it often..

namecheap gives 1 free year of whois privacy with domain purchases and transfers.
internet.bs gives free whois privacy also.
