yeah and IMO they suck at monetizing all that traffic. PPC and I-Tunes? I'd sell that space as exposure advertising to companies like Taco Bell or Pizza Hut like it's a fucking super bowl commercial.

Well, if you run any adsense sites you know Google pays. It's pennies, but believe me if you have the traffic you can rack up a fortune. Even with youtube likely taking a bigger cut, with the preroll ads, the inline ads, the side ads, the sponsored videos in the side bar (which are obviously all super optimized) and the millions and millions of video views this people are pulling, literally DAILY, I can only imagine the kind of money they are making. It is totally gay, and I don't get it either. But, a lot of people eat it up. The crazy thing is usually the high quality channels with full length professional videos get a hell of a lot less views then some douche giving his opinion on the daily news, go figure.

I've read before that Google pays something like $5 per k for music video streams. And they often loose money of these, people conservatively say that they pay out 1-2$ on average per k to regular youtube partners. Now, even at the low end of one measly dollar per k, people like Defranco are doing at-least 1 million unique views a day, maybe even multiples of that. So on the conservative 1 million, $1 per k (taking into account a lot of it is repeat traffic), $365k a year. I know if I had an adsense based site with 1 million uniques a day, even a forum with shitty ctr (repeat users) and low value per click I'd be making a hell of a lot more then that. So, I'd consider that conservative.

YouTube pays a minimum of $0.0033 per video view. AdWords is on top of that. Some of them actually do paid spots during their show also. Many have a website that also has ads.

They profit because people like you don't buy shit without thinking about what you are buying. You have probably never owned a "fad item" in your life unless you bought the item free-fad and you probably stopped using it once it became a fad.
