There is a similar captcha protection at http://www.tinypic.com.
However, when the image of the "a with two dots above it" is seen, it is sufficient to type "a without two dots above it."

I do not mind it so much when it's a simple word. But when it gets into these long words, punctuation and so on. Then it really gets to be a hassle.

Is that recaptcha? Only one of the words is known, the other is intended to be "judged" by multiple humans. So it's possible they're not even aware it's a foreign word.

No, it's not an umlaut.
It's one of three extra characters found in the Germanic language, mostly use up in the Scandinavian, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The three letters are å Å, ä Ä and ö Ö, then the Germans have a special symbol for double S and so on. It's still the alphabet, just a little different and with more letters.
