    Which car for $999?????

with a full warranty, (5mins or 20 feet which ever comes 1st) dont have to go fast, just gooooooooooooooo !!! .....

If you had $999.00 to spend and were looking for a car that could do 0-60 in less than 4.5 minutes, but could also be used most days to drive to the office and back which one would you choose.

I just bought a '99 Ford Ranger with 160k miles that runs perfectly for 43 cents from Enterprise. They charged a $25 processing fee.

It was a vehicle in my brother's corporate fleet that they were disposing of. I did not get a sweetheart deal ... anybody could have bought it at that price.

the catch is it is a fleet car which means you takes your chances...

I'm not shitting all over his deal, it sounds sweet as hell even if the engine falls out. I imagine it is well worth any repairs that might creep up.

I'd get yet another mid 90's land rover discovery. You can pick them up for a 1000 all day long. Just have a set of tools and know how to read cause your going to have to download the RAVE manual and do any repairs yourself (not hard).

In the end you get a car that can basically do anywhere, something you can beat the shit out of and have fun with and is actually pretty dependable all for less than the cost of a decent used quad.

I did a quick search and could not find any land rover at the price you mention. I like these and thought this might be a pretty low price you mentioned.

I guess the only catch was being in the right place at the right time. I guess the trick is knowing someone at the company ... in this case it was my brothers company. I imagine the employees always snatch them up ... my brother already has a truck though and didn't need a second one.

I have bought 2 , 1 for 1000 even, the second for 1500. The second one was a 97 SE7 with 93k original on it, the first one had 183k on it but one owner and in amazing shape. They are out here. What I do is stop when I see one sitting and leave a note

There is one in Chattanooga right now that a person could pick up for 800-1000 its a 97 also..

Damn, there are some good deals on that site. I stand corrected

How many miles can you put on one of these before any type of major work needs to be done, things like timing chain, valves...etc?

How many miles can you put on one of these before any type of major work needs to be done, things like timing chain, valves...etc?
They are what I like to call a "mechanics car" One of those cars you should not own if you can't work on them yourself. That said, they are simple to work on. A lot of people don't realize this but the rover 3.9/4.0 engine is a buick 215. (from the 60's) Of course it's been reworked by rover but you can still use parts from the original (like a set of the original 215 aluminum heads that buick only put out in 64)

The drive train is all but bullet proof, there are guys with 340k+ on the engines. There is always work to be done, seal go out, as do hoses etc... know that going into them. I just replaced the Valley Pan Gasket on the 186k one I bought. If you took it someplace to have that job done, your looking at 1200 bucks... did it myself and the parts came to 33 bucks. (I replaced the valve cover gaskets at the same time since your already there...) Took about 5 hours.

So in my 1000 buck truck, I have spent another 200 bucks in parts, a good 10 hours of my own labor and it's sweet. So nice in fact that I have also added custom headers, high flow cats, flowmaster mufflers, a 2 in suspension lift. That all said and done, I'll have 2k in it, but could just as easily left it alone and drove it with the $1200 total investment.

If you want to see it right after I put the new headers on (running open) and before I had done the other work check this out...

I have no problem working on my own cars so I am some what comfortable with any normal repairs, unless it is something major.....like breaking down the engine.

The reason I asked about timing chains and major items like this was because of what I went through when I purchased our 88 420SEL and after about 3K miles of driving, we had to replace the timing chain, as they go out around 200K and then shortly after that, I had a valve job done. For the most part, the car has been a great auto and I have no plans to let it go, nor will I let go of my 72 280SE, but we would love to get into some sort of 4x4 for weekend trips.
