What background color converts the best?

Im just wondering if anyone has done some detailed research on what background color for a porn website converts the best? And is there a big difference. For example, does a porn website with a black background convert better then a white background.

I go with white (or black for really amateur looking sites)

Thanks, but have you did any testing on this color? I had a website that was black, when I changed the color to blue the sales doubled.

Yellow and orange makes it look sleazier. Indeed a dark blue tone it's much better than plain black...

In color theory as relates to design and sales, blues (specifically lighter shades, like say robin egg blue) project feelings of trustworthiness. Or say the proverbial "they" say. I've also seen suggestions that blue when combined with hot colors can be a sales trigger. Blue/orange is supposedly a hot combo for sales. I gave it a try on a landing page once and it shit the bed though when put up against other combinations. I've seen red on black do well for adult traffic myself, and you'll notice the combination in use on a lot of landing pages. Red being an action color, it supposedly represents heat and passion, yadda yadda.

I did all the reading I could on the subject a while back now, but when I went looking for more detailed reading on the subject of color theory and advertising I couldn't seem to turn shit up for decent resources. It's all theory, but it definitely plays a roll. Best I can say, is split test different color combos against your traffic and see what plays out for you over time. Different combos seem to work well for different things. Ever notice that a vast majority of female weightloss pages are that same old green/purple combo? Depends what type of emotion you're attempting to trigger.

Thanks for the info. I went with 3 different shades of blue and a white and black text and sales doubled. I should point out I tested this over a 2 year period. 12 months on the old colors and 12 on the new.

On a non-adult website that was directly selling a product I had better sales after using a blue and yellow background with white, black, yellow and blue text.

I notice you mention, robin egg blue, has there been some research into this color?

white normally but for cheerleader type stuff maybe pink. White wakes up the person and pink just means cute.

black for tube and blue for tgps.

anyways i like faded logo repeat as background., it makes user confused and makes him to remember website. IMO

                              Backgrounds are for decoration.

I think the color totally depends on the niche.. shemale/tranny sites usually have black/brown (dark) background, but again ex gf sites usually have bright background

Really good porn in the background would convert.

Wrong. There's a certainly measurable difference for same content and different color combination. Try the same site with black, white, blue, pale yellow, pink and green and then tell me if there's no difference. Furthermore, try decent non-exclusive content and super hot exclusive content with the wrong color combination and you'll tear your hair off.

Today I bought a book on this, and there has been decades and thousands of research studies done on this. Im still reading it, but one interesting chapter is on how fast food outlets package in red and yellow because research has shown that those two colors combined increase appetite.

Wrong. Backgrounds do NOT convert if there is no content. Isolated to the background itself... It will NOT sell, no matter what color it is, if there is no content.

CONTENT CONVERTS... The rest only helps or hinders.

His question was "What background color converts the best?", not "What background color will help increase my sales?"

Big difference. Yes, it's a symantics issue I'm referring to, however, the fact remains...

                                                Backgrounds DO NOT convert.

"I'm selflessly supporting the common good, but only coincidentally looking out for No.1."

I like to think that the content sells the site, but I once A/B tested a white BG against a black BG and my sales literally TRIPLED with the black BG.

Having said that, no other site I've tested has had that sort of result. Just the one. Go figure.

Best thing you can do is A/B test the shit out of anything and everything you question. The stats won't lie to you and those stats will usually vary from site to site.

Yes, most corporate fast food chains rely heavily on color. LOTS of info out there on this and it's all very interesting stuff.

Try the same site with black, white, blue, pale yellow, pink and green and then tell me if there's no difference. Furthermore, try decent non-exclusive content and super hot exclusive content with the wrong color combination and you'll tear your hair off.

There have been at least 50 years of research on psychology of color and hundreds of millions of dollars spent and thousands of millions of test subjects (aka MARKET) involved, I assume there must be a little more to it that just "content converts".
I always look forward to your responses, Harvey. Thanks for the contribution.

Conclusion: still not having a clue about what converts better, too many variables to consider.
