    Smokers have lower IQs, says study

    The study of more than 20,000 Israeli military recruits found young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day or more had IQ scores that were 7.5 points lower than non-smokers.

    The study, by Dr Mark Weiser and colleagues from Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, found the average IQ for non-smokers was about 101, while it was 94 for men who had started smoking before entering the military.

    IQ steadily dropped as the number of cigarettes smoked increased - from 98 for people who smoked one to five cigarettes daily to 90 for those who smoked more than a pack a day.

      Of course smokers have lower IQ's. It's public information and has been for 40+ years that smoking causes lung cancer, emphysema, etc. You'd have to be a complete and total dunce to smoke in the first place.

      People that are smart listen to facts and knowledge and know not to smoke for fear of their well being. It takes a scientific study to figure this out?

                                                                                      There is one thing that's worse.... people who whine & bitch about 2nd-hand smoke all the time. Smoking has already been banished to the outdoors, so if you don't like 2nd-hand smoke, don't stand in the designated smoking areas. With no smoking allowed indoors anymore, there is nothing to complain about.

                                                                                              there is a lot of things you can die from. sure, smoking is bad for you but there are carsinogins in alcohol, perscription meds, all sorts of things. just eating burned meat could give you cancer. hell drinking bad tap water can give you cancer. lots of people drink coffee as their daily crutch but you can get stomach cancer from that too.

Also, the deaths related to all of your comparisons don't add up to even 1% of those related to smoking.

One kid is busy with life and I only hear from him about once a year. 2 other kids are estranged from me and my youngest daughter is dead.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  That reminds me of a classic idiotic quote that my wife's friend made trying to justify her smoking while pregnant.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  "I'll smoke on the porch when he's born"

                                                                                                                                                                                                  Not realizing she was doing more damage while she was pregnant. Amazingly enough, her son turned out fairly healthy and to have more intelligence than his mother. Must be one of those "skips a generation" genes.

The newborn wasn't a smoker so he was naturally more intelligent than his mother right from birth.
