"KANSAS CITY - Davy Arnaud and Kei Kamara scored first-half goals and the Kansas City Wizards beat Manchester United 2-1 Sunday in front of the largest crowd to see a soccer match in Kansas City.

A crowd of 52,342, the biggest for Manchester United on its North American tour so far -- eclipsed the 37,319 who witnessed a World Cup qualifier here in 2001.

The crowd may have also been drawn partly out of curiosity to see the newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium, which was hosting its first event after a $325 million makeover.

Backup goalkeeper Eric Kronberg replaced Jimmy Nielsen at halftime and made five saves for the Wizards, who have not won an MLS title since 2000 and are 4-8-4 this season.

In the 11th minute, Arnaud beat United's offside trap and took a well-placed through ball from Kei Kamara. Given the one-on-one against backup keeper Ben Amos, Arnaud dribbled into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner. Dimitar Berbatov equalized from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after defender Jimmy Conrad was sent off for a sliding tackle on him.

Replays appeared to show Conrad made contact with the ball before Berbatov went down, but referee Terry Vaughn went straight for the red card and Berbatov converted with a roller into the lower right corner.

Kamara's goal put the Wizards up 2-1 in the 42nd minute. He headed Ryan Smith's corner kick over Amos and off the underside of the crossbar, and the ball landed just over the goal line. Manchester United, the world's biggest soccer brand and a longtime power in the English Premier League, played without several of its stars, including Ji-Sung Park, Rio Ferndinand, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick.

The Wizards had 12 shots in the first half to five for the Red Devils, and led on shots on goal 6-4. Manchester United's next stop will be a match against the MLS all-stars on Wednesday in Houston.

Earlier Sunday, the New York Red Bulls beat Manchester City, another English Premier League heavyweight, 2-1.

Officials hoped a big, enthusiastic crowd would help the town's bid to host future World Cup games.

"I do think it's part of the equation," said Clark Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and former owner of the Wizards. "I'm very optimistic that the United States has a very good shot at landing the 2022 World Cup, and Arrowhead is on the list as one of the 18 stadiums that would be a possible venue for that game." Hunt lobbied hard to get the Manchester United-Wizards match.

"Events like tonight's where we're going to have over 50,000 people in the building for a soccer game I think will be a big selling point for both FIFA and U.S. Soccer when it comes time to make the decision on which stadium to bring the World Cup to," he said."

Oh, pardon me for bumping but I was rather hoping for some kind of response from the 4:00 tea crowd, what with Manchester having been bested by the Colonials in the Heartland. On second thought, I suppose that there really isn't that much more to say!

Well for starters there are more than one team in Manchester, I think Man City fans will be upset by calling Man U "Manchester"

Also your forst post actually says that they played without many of their top names so in effect your team beat the Manchester Unieted reserves.

it's like the yankees touring Africa. They don't take 50% of their players, and the ones left are usually 3rd or 4th string with no hope of ever making the 1st team...lol

Anyway I hate Man U, so even if their team was made up of 4th string idiots I'm happy to see them get beat by anyone.

Yes, ManU are in preseason, but it is still an impressive victory for the Wizards, considering they are well off the top of the table and they played a man down.

There were quite a few solid players in the starting 11 for ManU. Giggs, Berbatov, Nani, Scholes, Rafael to name a few.

I hate pre season.

Don't see why clubs travel the length of the planet to play a few "warm up" games. Then midway through the season they start to moan about being tired.

I confess!

I am a dirty slut and I put up the original post just to see how much time users would waste out of their lives living vicariously through a bunch of jocks. I don't give a rat's ass about soccer, baseball, football, basketball or any other so-called "sport"; there are only two real sports; auto racing and bare knuckle boxing.

Amazing how easily people are diverted from MAKING MONEY to discussing a group of large men kicking a small ball around a medium sized field to see who can put the ball in a net.

Every second wasted on soccer or some similar activity could well represent a dollar that you don't earn.

None at all. I was shut down and on my own time but you will note that the "Fucking Around" forum has some 16,000,000 posts; well over twenty times the number of posts on the next closest forum.

Just a little experiment I ran which yielded interesting results and don't bother trying to tell me that the biggest percentage of the 16,000,000 "Fucking Around" posts are all done when the posters are off duty, 'cause it just ain't so.
