Here's a good one... a host that requires the CUSTOMER to take out liability insurance! WTF?

... and before you think this is for customers who colocate and maintain their own equipment, this applies to everyone... including customers who never see the server they lease, the data center or possibly even the country the host is located in.

The host's contract requires the customer to (independently) obtain 3 different types of liability insurance, with a minimum cover level of one million Euros.

They can request a certificate of insurance at any time and if the customer cannot produce proof within 10 days it would presumably be considered a violation of contract.

Better not load the wrong URL on your fully managed server, it may catch on fire and destroy the data center.

hmmm maybe they want to be insulate themselves from any potential lawsuits because of what you are doing on the servers? They figure if you have a big liability policy then the people sueing might just sue you then and not include them?

No idea, but I don't think it is from potential physical damage from a server catching fire.

Good point, I hadn't considered that.

The interesting thing is that their month to month customers don't seem to need to sign this contract. If you were really doing something shifty then it would probably be worth paying 10-20% more to NOT be on contract...

Not every country has a law that provides safe harbour for hosts. Maybe the country the DC is in doesn't have such a law and they have to do this to cover their asses?

Actually, I've seen this same language here in the states and as recent as a month ago. If I come across it, I'll let you know.

Maybe they just watched Michael Moore's crappy capitalism movie and want you to take out life insurance.
